POSITIVES

— Decent instincts against the run to key and diagnose and put himself in a position to take on blocks.

— God pad level and wraps up when tackling in the box. Doesn't miss much in confined areas.

— Good eye discipline, and uses his hands to help get re-routes in zone coverage.

— Hustle player with solid speed who will factor into gang tackles down the field.

NEGATIVES

— Undersized with short arms and already has a thick build. Might not have much room for growth.

— Struggles to hold his ground and disengage from blocks in the running game.

— Lacks the movement skills to cover tight ends and running backs in man coverage and tighten throwing windows in zone.

— Will overpursue or miss tackles in open space with subpar change-of-direction skills and ability to sink his hips and throttle down.

2023 STATISTICS

NOTES

— 3-star recruit in the 2019 class, per 247Sports

— Injuries: 2023 (Hip flexor, missed 3 games)

— Transferred from Oregon State ahead of 2023 season

OVERALL

Omar Speights was an All-Pac 12 performer at Oregon State before transferring to LSU, but changing schools didn't yield better results. He battled a hip injury early in the season and proved to be reliant on his solid instincts to make plays.

That didn't result in many impact tackles, as the stats above show.

Speights is also undersized and doesn't show great movement skills, so he'll likely go undrafted, but he is worth bringing into training camp. He stands out as a hustle player and shows decent straight-line speed to potentially contribute on special teams.

GRADE: 5.3 (Backup/UDFA with Roster Potential — UDFA)

OVERALL RANK: 276

POSITION RANK: LB24

PRO COMPARISON: Eric Wilson
