NBA GM Projects Lakers Trade Anthony Davis to Knicks: 'You Can Get a Huge Haul'

If the Los Angeles Lakers decide to move on from All-Star center Anthony Davis, one NBA general manager believes the New York Knicks would be their best trade partner, according to Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports.

"You need a team willing to take on his money. Because it's a lot. And you need a team who can load you up with draft picks," the NBA general manager told Deveney.

"There's really one team that fits all of those, and that's the Knicks," the GM continued. "It would not be hard to make a deal work there. You can line up the salaries. You can package a ton of picks. You can throw in a young player. You can take on a salary the Lakers might not want. I mean, he is one player and you can get a huge haul here."

Davis, 31, has played for the Lakers since 2019. He has averaged 24.6 points and 12.7 rebounds in 75 games this season.

The nine-time All-Star is owed a base salary of $43.2 million for the 2024-25 season prior to the start of a three-year extension worth $62 million per year.

That max extension, designed to keep Davis in Los Angeles through 2028, set a record for the highest average annual value in NBA history.

The Lakers in 2019 dealt three first-round picks and dealt Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart to acquire Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans, a trade that ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski described at the time as "one of the most substantial returns on a single star player in modern league history."

Five years and three All-Star campaigns for Davis later, the Los Angeles are likely looking to find another package of both picks and NBA players.

The Knicks are positioned to meet that demand thanks to their possession of their own first-round selection in the 2024 draft as well as protected picks from the Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards.

The Wizards and Pistons picks are likely too well-protected to pay off this offseason. They could still be valuable to the Lakers in the future, especially if the team needs to plan a rebuild given the uncertainty surrounding whether LeBron James will return for the 2024-25 season.

The Knicks also potentially package another All-Star starter like Julius Randle in a trade for Davis. One team executive in the NBA's Western Conference told Deveney that the Knicks will need to include Randle in any trade for "another star."

Randle has two seasons, including a $29.5 million player option, remaining on his deal with the Knicks. He averaged 24 points per game in 46 starts this season.

Randle was ruled out for the postseason after undergoing shoulder surgery in April. The Knicks could find Davis, who is coming off of his healthiest campaign since 2018, an attractive replacement even if it means taking on extra salary.
