After a windy Round 2 at the Masters on Friday, conditions improved on Saturday and made for an exciting third round.
The second round was filled with pars and bogeys all around, but with better conditions came better golf on Saturday. That favored Collin Morikawa, who shot three under on Saturday and finished the day just behind the leader, Scottie Scheffler, who shot one under in the third round and is at seven under heading into Sunday.
While several golfers posted better days on Saturday, Tiger Woods struggled and dropped significantly on the leaderboard after posting his worst round ever at the Masters.
An exciting third round set the stage for what should be a dramatic final day at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday.
Scheffler Surges Past Morikawa on No. 18
There was potential for a tie at the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday, but Scottie Scheffler made sure to claim the top spot on the 54th hole of the tournament.
Scheffler finished the day at seven under after posting a one-under-par 71 on Saturday. He was two back from the top spot on one point in the third round, but an impressive finish to the day means he will hold a one-stroke lead on Sunday.
Collin Morikawa finished the third round at six under after posting the best score of the day with a three-under-par 69, but it wasn't enough to get the edge over Scheffler.
Scheffler's lead came down to his final putt of Saturday. He was tied with Morikawa at six under, but a birdie at 18 gave him the solo lead entering Sunday:
The battle between Scheffler and Morikawa is going to be a delight for fans on Sunday, though the tournament is still up for grabs beyond those two.
Max Homa sits two strokes behind Scheffler, Ludvig Åberg is three strokes back and Bryson DeChambeau is four strokes off the lead after holing out from the fairway for birdie on No. 18.
Tiger Woods Struggles to Career-Worst Round
Tiger Woods made history on Friday. The 48-year-old made the cut for the 24th consecutive time, setting a new record at the Masters.
"It means I have a chance going into the weekend," Woods said after the second round. "I'm here. I have a chance to win the golf tournament."
But things were much different for the legend on Saturday as he posted his worst round ever at Augusta National, shooting 10-over 82 in the third round.
He managed well through the early part of the day, staying even-par through the first five holes and recording a birdie at No. 5. After a solid start, he struggled through the rest of the round with a pair of bogeys and two double bogeys to round out his front-nine.
He tacked on five bogeys, a birdie and three pars on the back nine.
Woods' front-nine score of 42 was the highest nine-hole score of his Masters career.
The five-time Masters winner will play his 100th career round at Augusta on Sunday.
Young Golfers Shine in 1st Masters
Ludvig Åberg and Nicolai Højgaard are playing in their first Masters this weekend, but they haven't backed down against stiff veteran competition.
Åberg sits in fourth place at four under after posting a third-round 70. He joined the leaderboard momentarily after a birdie on the 13th hole, but he didn't hold that position through the back nine.
Still, the 24-year-old is in an enviable position heading into Sunday and has a chance to take home a Green Jacket in his first appearance at Augusta National.
Højgaard also posted a respectable day, but trouble down the back nine means he'll have some work to do on Sunday. He took the lead outright at the 10th hole after sinking a 48-foot putt, but that lead was shortlived as he made five consecutive bogies between Nos. 11-15.
Højgaard's third-round 74 has him at two under for the tournament, good for a share of sixth place.
Åberg and Højgaard will need impressive performances on Sunday to have a chance at dethroning Scheffler, but they have certainly proved themselves so far in their first Masters.
