NHL Rumors: Coyotes Players Informed of Salt Lake City Relocation for 2024-25 Season

Paul Kasabian

Arizona Coyotes players have reportedly been informed that the team is moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, per NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

"Players and staff may be headed to Salt Lake City right after Wednesday's game to check out the facilities and the city," Friedman reported.

"More: there is still work to do, timing obviously is fluid, but players were told of the pending move and there will be an opportunity to see the potential new surroundings."

That news follows reports from Frank Seravalli of the Daily Faceoff as well as ESPN's Emily Kaplan and Greg Wyshynski that the NHL was putting together a contingency plan to relocate the Coyotes to Utah as soon as the 2024-25 season in the wake of the franchise's past and present issues to find a suitable location for a new arena.

The Coyotes have been playing at Arizona State University's Mullett Arena (4,600 capacity) since the city of Glendale terminated its lease with the team for them to use Gila River Arena after the 2021-22 season.

The team has publicly stated its plans to bid on a 95-acre parcel of land in north Phoenix that will go up for auction on June 27.

However, this news has run parallel with the Smith Entertainment Group, the parent company of the NBA's Utah Jazz, expressing its desire to bring the NHL to Salt Lake City. That group is led by Jazz governor Ryan Smith.

Per Ian Mendes of The Athletic, they have an arena in place for the team to play in the Delta Center to start before potentially moving to a brand new stadium. They also have political backing in place.

"We're eager. We are able to leverage two or three times private money with taxpayer money," Salt Lake City mayor Erin Mendenall said.

As far as the logistics go, Kaplan and Wyshynski explained the sale processes, beginning with the league buying the Coyotes from owner Alex Meruelo:

"The NHL would purchase the Coyotes from Meruelo in a deal believed to be worth around $1 billion. This would mark the second time the NHL would have owned the Coyotes, buying the franchise from owner Jerry Moyes in 2009 after he filed for bankruptcy. The league owned and operated the Coyotes until 2013.

"The league source said that after purchasing the team, the NHL would then sell the Coyotes to Smith at a price that could be as high as $1.3 billion."

The league's 31 owners would also split $300 million from the sale, per ESPN.

The NHL's board of governors would have to approve the deal in their June meeting, but given the latest reports, an approval almost appears to be a formality at this juncture.
