Masters 2024: 3 Instant Reactions to Thursday Leaderboard Scores

Joe Tansey

Bryson DeChambeau was the only golfer better than Scottie Scheffler during the first round of the 2024 Masters.

DeChambeau carded a seven-under 65 to top the leaderboard before play was suspended Thursday night.

Scheffler finished his first round one shot back of DeChambeau. Both players will come back out to play their second rounds on Friday afternoon.

Nicolai Hojgaard and Max Homa are the highest-placed players who have to come back to complete the first round on Friday.

Homa is playing alongside Tiger Woods, who had 10 pars, two bogeys and one birdie through a solid 13 holes of golf.

Woods will be under the spotlight more on Friday because of the physical toll 23 holes will take on him as he tries to make his 24th consecutive cut at the Masters.

DeChambeau recorded his best-ever single-round score at the Masters on Thursday.

The one-time major champion rolled in birdies on the first three holes and then dominated the back nine to gain a commanding lead on the field before Scheffler made a late surge.

DeChambeau finished with five birdies in his last seven holes. The lone blemish on his scorecard was a bogey at the ninth hole.

He is in a terrific position to be the first-round Masters leader for the second time in his career. He used a six-under 66 in 2019 to sit atop the leaderboard.

Hojgaard, Homa and Tyrrell Hatton are the only golfers within four shots of DeChambeau who have yet to complete their first rounds.

DeChambeau could still be in the lead by himself by the time he tees off on Friday afternoon if the windy conditions persist at Augusta National Golf Club.

It is no surprise to see Scheffler in second place after one round.

The 2022 Masters champion played a bogey-free 18 holes that culminated with four birdies in his last seven holes.

Scheffler is in perfect position to take over the lead from DeChambeau and gain separation from the rest of the field on Friday.

Scheffler used a second-round surge two years ago to take control of the tournament and never look back.

He shot an opening-round 69 and followed that with a 67 to gain a five-shot advantage after 36 holes.

Scheffler could produce something similar on Friday since only eight players are at three-under or better.

The last thing anyone else in the field wants to see is Scheffler replicate his 2022 Friday performance, so that the field is competitive going into the weekend.

Tiger Woods Turns in Solid Opening 13 Holes

Woods turned in a consistent opening 13 holes at Augusta.

The 15-time major champion rolled in a birdie on his first hole and kept a steady rhythm for most of his round.

Woods bogeyed the fourth hole, but then he bounced back with three straight pars and a birdie on the par-five eighth hole.

Woods has five holes left to post a solid first-round score. He is one of 31 players under par, but he could jump into the top 10 with one more birdie. Fifteen golfers are tied at one-under.

He is searching to make his 24th straight Masters cut, but the rigors of a 23-hole day could become an issue.

Woods dealt with his share of injury issues in recent years and his body will be tested by walking the course for longer than expected on a second day of a major.
