A solar eclipse was visible throughout much of the United States on Monday, and a number of prominent figures around the sporting world—including NFL star Patrick Mahomes and NBA stars like Jalen Brunson and Trae Young—took in the rare event.

And yes, people, you need special glasses to safely view it:

Total solar eclipses are pretty rare (far more rare than total eclipses of the heart, which happen regularly at karaoke nights). According to CBS News, the last one happened in 2021 and was only visible in Antarctica, while the last total solar eclipse visible in North America occurred back in 2017.

Before that, you have to go back all the way to 1979 to find a solar eclipse visible in the United States, and the next one Americans will be able to enjoy—unless they travel to the Arctic region, Greenland, Spain or Iceland in 2026—will be in 2044.
