Veteran wing Caleb Martin is declining his $7.1 million player option with the Miami Heat for the 2024-25 season, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

A reunion with Miami is possible but figures to be much costlier than his original price tag. That's why it's little surprise to see him hit the open market.

Max Strus parlayed his time in a supporting role with the Heat into a four-year, $62.3 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers last offseason. Gabe Vincent got $33 million over three years from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Martin stepped up in a big way in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals to help propel the Heat to the Finals. While his performance has naturally regressed in 2023-24, he continued to be an effective three-and-D player with Miami.

In 64 games, the 6'5" forward averaged 10.0 points and 4.4 rebounds while shooting 34.9 percent. His scoring average sat at 11.6 points per contest in the playoffs as Miami exited in the first round.

The Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang reported in March that Martin was playing through a thumb injury on his left hand that will likely require offseason surgery. There wasn't a noticeable dip in his production despite being less than 100 percent, which reflected a larger theme with the Heat.

"I think with good players and good teams, every time you play high level competition and things intensify, you see what guys grow and what guys kind of shrink," he said, per Chiang. "I always feel like I play my best when the stakes are higher. I just try to hone in and just amplify my game around this time of the year, for sure."

Miami rises to the occasion unlike almost any other in the league. It starts at the top with Jimmy Butler and filters across the roster. Martin is one of multiple unsung heroes who has emerged in South Florida.

The front office is all too aware of how the organization's sustained success comes at a cost. Whether it's the contract extensions for Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson or players like Vincent and Strus cashing out elsewhere, the better the Heat are the more their supporting cast watches its value climb.

It might be safe to assume Martin could follow Vincent and Strus out the door.

Butler, Adebayo, Herro, Robinson and Terry Rozier will combine to earn nearly $157 million in 2024-25. Having that much tied up in just five players doesn't leave a lot of money left over for outside signings or even new contracts with current contributors.

As much as Martin might like to extend his stay in Miami, making the best decision for himself almost certainly means getting paid elsewhere.
