Texas, NC State Play with Different 3-Point Line Measurements in WCBB Elite 8 Game

Coaches for Texas and North Carolina State discovered quite the surprise leading up to Sunday's Elite Eight matchup in the 2024 NCAA women's basketball tournament.

One three-point arc was shorter than the other. Officials broke out a tape measure to confirm what Texas' Vic Schaefer and NC State's Wes Moore suspected after an informal assessment.

The NCAA issued a statement and confirmed the problem will be remedied before the Elite Eight concludes Monday:

"[The NCAA] gave us the option of bringing somebody in and remarking it correctly which would've taken an hour and we might have lost our window with ABC, or playing how it was," Schaefer said after the game, via Luka Weese of The Athletic. "Wes [Moore] wanted to play and we played. I wasn't gonna be the guy that goes, 'No, I don't want to do it.'"

North Carolina State ultimately upset top-seeded Texas with a 76-66 victory to reach the Final Four.

Beyond the fact that such a fundamental aspect of the court was incorrectly outlined in the first place, fans couldn't believe it went unnoticed until Sunday. Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, hosted two Sweet 16 games on Saturday and two others before that Friday.

It was impossible not to speculate how the difference in three-point distances might have impacted the earlier contests.

This wasn't the first time in this year's tournament—and coincidentally enough not the first time involving NC State—an oversight led to questions being asked of the NCAA. The organization had to replace one of the referees from the Wolfpack's 64-45 win over Chattanooga because the referee had obtained a master's degree from Chattanooga.
