NFL Replay Assist Expanded for 2024 Season on Roughing, Intentional Grounding, More

Mike Chiari

The NFL replay assist will be expanded in 2024 to include intentional grounding, roughing the passer and late hit out-of-bounds penalties.

According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, in-game officials will only be able to receive help from the replay crew in New York if flags have already been thrown for those specific infractions.

The replay assistant can review the calls and determine if a quarterback was in the pocket or under duress on an intentional grounding call, they can decide if there is "clear and obvious" evidence that a defender did not make contact with the head or neck area of a quarterback on a roughing the passer call and they can reverse a late hit out of bounds call if it is determined that the runner was hit while still clearly inbounds.

Since 2022, the NFL has had a rule in place that allows the on-field officials to communicate with replay officials in New York regarding certain calls.

Dubbed an "expedited review," some calls can be changed in that way rather than going through a full-fledged review in the name of avoiding lengthy delays.

The replay assist expansion is one of several NFL rules that have been altered over the past week at the league meetings.

On-field changes include the banning of the hip-drop tackle and a new kickoff rule similar to the one previously used in the XFL.

Now, the kicking team and receiving team members will line up within five yards of each other and will not be permitted to move until the returner touches the ball. The change is meant to promote more returns, while also minimizing high-impact collisions.

Additionally, teams will receive a third challenge if they win one of their two coach's challenges. Previously, teams had to win both challenges to earn a third.

Also, the NFL trade deadline has been moved back one week from Week 8 to Week 9.
