Seahawks' Sam Howell Says He's 'Got to Be Smarter' with INTs After Commanders Trade

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Howell said he has "got to be smarter" after throwing a NFL-high 21 interceptions for the Washington Commanders last season.

"Obviously the interceptions, I've just got to do a better job," Howell said Wednesday on Seattle Sports' Brock and Salk Show (h/t Brandon Gustafson.) "There were some times where we were down in some games and I was just trying to be a little aggressive and at times maybe just tried to do a little too much, trying to give us a chance. But I've got to be smarter, got to play smarter football, got to play winning football.

"And at times I was doing it, so just doing it at a more consistent rate. And I feel confident about my ability to do that. It's just a matter of if I get an opportunity I've got to go out there and show it."

Although Howell also took a league-high 65 sacks while leading the Commanders to a 4-13 record, he also ranked 12th among all quarterbacks with 3,946 passing yards.

Howell was traded to the Commanders for draft picks on March 14 as Washington prepares to draft a new quarterback with the No. 2 pick of the upcoming draft.

The Seahawks quarterback said on the Brock and Salk Show that Commanders general manager Adam Peters "knew that Seattle was a place that I was interested in going to" ahead of the trade.

"Adam just kind of told me at the end of the day it came down to Seattle wanted me more than anybody else. And I'm happy with it. I'm happy to be a Seahawk," Howell said.

Howell will now attempt to work on his throwing accuracy behind veteran quarterback Geno Smith, who was named to his second straight Pro Bowl in 2023 after throwing for 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions for the Seahawks last season.
