Stock Up, Stock Down For WWE's Top Stars Heading Into WrestleMania 40

Philip Lindsey

Next weekend, WWE will head to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia for WrestleMania 40.

The company's preeminent premium live event is its crowning achievement, and this year's card boasts two massive main events. To that end, the two-night show feels like the culmination of years of storytelling.

We will have to wait and see if Cody Rhodes can finish his story and achieve his goal of becoming WWE champion, but it's been quite a ride up to this point.

It's fair to say that many of the other storylines haven't progressed as consistently, and many Superstars haven't received the necessary screen time to develop a direction.

Nonetheless, The Show of Shows is rapidly approaching on April 6-7, and this could be one to remember.

Let's track how these five Superstars' stock rose or dropped before the annual event.

Becky Lynch: Stock Up

Becky Lynch had a rough start to the year but quickly recovered at Elimination Chamber, where she earned a shot at the Women's World Championship.

The Man has been on a collision course with champion Rhea Ripley since late 2022, but it hasn't been an easy road to this dream matchup. The Irish star suffered a devastating loss to Nia Jax on the Day 1 edition of Raw and failed to win the 2024 women's Royal Rumble match.

However, Lynch survived the women's Elimination Chamber match in Australia and continues to deliver exceptional performances. Her subsequent contest with Liv Morgan and her recent rematch against Jax were outstanding.

This week's segment with Ripley also added some much-needed fireworks to their upcoming showdown on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Pretty Deadly: Stock Down

Pretty Deadly were a promising duo on NXT, and their call-up to SmackDown went surprisingly well.

So, it's a bit perplexing that the British tag team doesn't have a direction heading into WrestleMania 40.

One could argue this is a testament to the uptick of great pairings on the blue brand, but most of us expected them to be one of the two teams to represent SmackDown in the six-pack ladder match.

However, Elton Prince and Kit Wilson lost to The New Catch Republic in the first round of the qualifier tournament and dropped out of the running. This outcome doesn't spell gloom and doom for them, but their stock took a slight hit ahead of The Show of Shows.

Hopefully, there are plans for Pretty Deadly this year because they're so much fun to watch.

Drew McIntyre: Stock Up

With all the major players involved in a star-studded tag team match, Drew McIntyre remains the most compelling heel on Raw.

His upcoming match with Seth Rollins has felt underdeveloped at times, but The Scottish Warrior has been phenomenal since his return to Monday nights.

The 38-year-old is possibly more convincing than ever in this role, and his motives and hypocritical posturing are enough to make viewers second-guess his sincerity.

The Scot's masterful use of social media and tongue-in-cheek references have been brilliant. If showing up to Mindy's Bakery to taunt CM Punk in his hometown of Chicago wasn't enough, he and Rollins also took part in an incredible segment with The Second City Saint on this week's episode of Raw.

Although his contract will expire soon, WWE must lock McIntyre in for an extension at this rate. His latest character change has been a refreshing addition to the flagship show.

Chad Gable: Stock Down

Watching Chad Gable lose the gauntlet match and his chance to avenge his loss to Gunther on the March 11 episode of Raw was deflating.

Yes, we're still invested in Sami Zayn's quest to win championship gold, and there's no doubt this outcome will lead to an excellent contest, but it's hard to understand why WWE built up anticipation for the third installment of a matchup fans enjoyed in 2023 only to leave us wanting.

This was a perfect opportunity to give Gable a well-deserved WrestleMania moment and a career-defining win. Instead, the 38-year-old lost his path to The Show of Shows and any positive momentum remaining from last year.

The Rock: Stock Up

The Rock's heel turn following the WrestleMania Kickoff press conference has been the highlight of this year's build to The Showcase of the Immortals.

The Great One continues to prove why he is one of the greatest of all time, cutting wildly entertaining promo online and on television. His segments and character work have been every bit as captivating as some of his best output from the Attitude Era.

After the third-generation star skipped last week's episode of SmackDown, he reemerged in a surprise appearance on Raw to confront Cody Rhodes. To close the show, The Brahma Bull left The American Nightmare bleeding outside the Allstate Arena to the dismay of the Chicago crowd.

This cliffhanger was the best ending to the flagship series in recent memory and a tremendous way to generate excitement for WWE's biggest premium live event of the year.
