Backstage WWE Rumors: Latest on CM Punk Promo, Ridge Holland, and More

Erik Beaston

CM Punk returned to WWE Raw Monday night and found himself involved in a three-way promo with Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins that caused social media buzz.

Thanks to insider reports, there is now more info on the segment and how it came together.

That headlines a collection of rumors that also includes an update on Ridge Holland following an emotional retirement promo on Tuesday's NXT and an update on the next WrestleMania location.

Reaction to Raw Promo Between CM Punk, Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins

CM Punk, Drew McIntyre and world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins captivated fans with one of the best promo segments in recent memory on Monday's Raw.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select wrote:

"The claim internally is that there was a general outline, and [we] are told that the talent knew they were all going to just go for it and see what happens.

"The promo was listed as one segment, and was produced by Adam Pearce, as there was physicality between Rollins and McIntyre. We're told that WWE production wasn't anticipating CM Punk's line where he cursed, and there was a memo sent to talent recently that discouraged them from swearing on the air."

Punk faced no heat for swearing. The result was an entertaining segment of television that heated up the World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 40.

The most interesting element of the report is that the promo was essentially outlined, but the performers had the opportunity to go out and "see what happens." It's a method that worked well in the Attitude Era and resulted in fans having the opportunity to better connect with the characters on the screen.

While WWE is unlikely to completely drop scripted promos, it's nice to see three top-tier guys given the leeway to express themselves and their characters without having every word written for them.

The creative team should employ this more frequently after WrestleMania.

Update on Ridge Holland's NXT 'Retirement'

Fightful Select's Sapp and Corey Brennan reported that Ridge Holland's "retirement" on Tuesday's NXT is simply part of his ongoing story.

The Englishman, 35, cited his desire to spend more time with his family and to look after his mental health as the reasons for stepping away in the promo. He recently feuded with Gallus and Shawn Spears.

The report stated that Holland has been receptive to ideas and that he has been motivated to participate in the story.

WrestleMania 41 Location

Sapp also reported that WrestleMania 41 could be headed to Minnesota:

"There are several government officials who have hinted heavily at the upcoming announcement of a major show. When we've asked WWE officials, they would not confirm or deny that WrestleMania was headed there. However, there are people of influence within Minnesota that tell Fightful they've prepared for the upcoming announcement of the event."

The Showcase of the Immortals has never been staged in the state before, and the venue is likely to be the U.S. Bank Stadium, the home of the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL.

The last WWE premium live event held in Minnesota was the TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs show in 2019.

Holding WrestleMania in a state where heavy snowstorms can be fairly commonplace in April is certainly a choice, but it's a fresh setting and a city with a passionate wrestling fanbase, which makes it a good location.
