Yankees Acquire Jon Berti in 3-Way Trade; Rays Get Ben Rortvedt, John Cruz to Marlins

One day before Major League Baseball's Opening Day, the New York Yankees agreed to acquire utility man Jon Berti from the Miami Marlins, the team announced Wednesday:

Minor leaguer John Cruz will go to the Marlins in a deal first reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post added the Yankees will send catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Tampa Bay Rays as part of a three-team deal. The Rays will also send outfield prospect Shane Sasaki to the Marlins, according to Sherman.

Cruz, an 18-year-old outfielder, was the Yankees' No. 28 prospect, per MLB Pipeline.

Berti, 34, is a six-year MLB veteran who has spent the past five seasons in Miami.

Since the Yankees likely already have their everyday starters locked in place in the infield (Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres, Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu), in the outfield (Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo) and at designated hitter (Giancarlo Stanton), Berti is likely to be a valuable piece off the bench for much of the season.

However, he could start right out of the gates since two important members of the Yankee infield are injured.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday that LeMahieu, who was penciled in to start at third base and is capable of playing every infield position, will start the season on the injured list with a bruised right foot.

Earlier this month, it was announced that another utility infielder in Oswald Peraza would miss the next six to eight weeks and start the season on the IL with a shoulder strain.

That left utility man Oswaldo Cabrera as the Yanks' only real option at third base, but Berti should now push for playing time as well.

The two best aspects of Berti's game are his versatility in the field and his speed on the basepaths, both of which could be a big help to the Yanks in 2024.

Over 436 career regular-season games, Berti has appeared in games at third base, second base and shortstop, and at all three outfield positions.

He has primarily been an infielder, appearing in over 100 games at third, short and second, but he has nearly 100 games of experience in the outfield as well.

Berti also has 92 career stolen bases on 112 attempts, including a career-high 41 in 102 games in 2022.

He owns a career slash line of .258/.337/.368 to go along with 23 home runs, 120 RBI and 210 runs scored.

Berti saw the most extensive action of his career last season when he played in a career-high 133 games for the Marlins and set personal bests with a .294 batting average, seven homers, 33 RBI and 53 runs, plus he stole 16 bases in 22 chances.

His skill set could play well in New York since the Yankees already have a star-studded lineup with plenty of power, but are somewhat lacking in speed aside from Volpe.

Assuming Berti joins the team in time, he will perhaps have an opportunity to make his Yankees debut Thursday when the Bronx Bombers go on the road to face the Houston Astros on Opening Day.
