Kirby Smart: Georgia RB Trevor Etienne Could Face Suspension After DUI Arrest

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday that running back Trevor Etienne is facing disciplinary action from the university and the athletic department following his DUI arrest this past weekend, per ESPN's Chris Low.

Georgia's athletic department policy would require Etienne to miss 10 percent of the Bulldogs' upcoming season, which equates to at least one game out of the team's 12-game schedule, if he's found guilty of DUI. The team's season opener is set for Aug. 31 in Atlanta against Clemson.

Smart, who called Etienne a "great kid, great person" at the start of his weekly news conference, said the legal process has to run its course before disciplinary actions are determined.

"As we also know, kids sometimes don't make the best decisions," Smart said. "The older you get, sometimes the tougher the consequences are for your mistakes. So, he's not going to let this mistake define him. He's embarrassed. He's upset. He knows he made a mistake. It's a teaching moment, and we hope he gets better from it."

A transfer from Florida and the younger brother of Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, the 19-year-old was seen traveling at a speed of 80 to 90 miles per hour in a 50-mph zone and crossing over a double yellow line twice to pass vehicles at 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, per an Athens-Clarke County Police Department report.

Police said Etienne admitted to officers that he drank three beers "way earlier" and told them he was on his way home. He declined to consent to a field sobriety test, and when asked for an ID, he gave the arresting officer his car key. Etienne had "slurred speech, glossy eyes and was swaying back and forth while standing on flat ground," according to police.

In addition to the DUI charge, Etienne also faces charges of reckless driving, failure to maintain lane/improper driving on the road and affixing materials that reduce visibility of windows/windshield. He can be convicted of DUI even if his blood-alcohol level is below .08 in Georgia.

Etienne rushed for 1,472 yards and scored 15 touchdowns in two seasons at Florida, and he was expected to see a major role in Georgia's backfield in 2024.

At least 14 times last year, Georgia football players were arrested or cited for speeding or reckless driving, per ESPN. Those numbers came even after the crash on Jan. 15, 2023, that killed offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy. Police said that speed and alcohol played a role in that crash.

Smart told Low that the school has provided counseling to players on the dangers of reckless or impaired driving. Guest speakers have been invited to speak to the Bulldogs regularly. At the start of last season, the school brought in former NFL receiver Donte Stallworth, who killed a pedestrian while driving drunk in Florida in 2009.

"It wasn't just because of some of the issues we've had, but we got (Stallworth) in here because over and above getting a DUI and all that entails, you can kill somebody," Smart said. "I wanted our kids to hear it from somebody who had gone through something that terrible."
