WWE WrestleMania 40: The Rock and the Stars Who Will Have Biggest Impact in Philly

Erik Beaston

WWE returns to Philadelphia for the first time since 1999 for its annual Showcase of the Immortals, WrestleMania, on April 6 and 7.

The show, headlined by the return of The Rock to the squared circle as part of a monumental tag team encounter on Saturday and the rematch for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, will serve as an exclamation point on the return to form for professional wrestling's most prominent company.

With business booming, the eyes of the industry will be on the City of Brotherly Love and these four Superstars poised to leave the greatest impact on the two-night extravaganza.

The Rock

The Rock is not rolling into Philadelphia for WrestleMania, his first appearance at the Showcase of the Immortals since 2016 to be a non-factor.

The Final Boss will team with Roman Reigns to battle Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins on Saturday and will almost certainly be involved in Sunday's Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match between The Tribal Chief and American Nightmare.

He has been all over the promotion for the event, has been the central figure in the top storyline, and Monday night on Raw, introduced a vicious and vile side of himself the likes of which fans have never seen before as he beat down and bloodied Rhodes outside the Allstate Arena in suburban Chicago.

The Great One is not only poised to make an impact on April 6 and 7 in the City of Brotherly Love, but it should surprise no one if he ends up being the most buzzed-about performer on the entire show.

That is what happens when one is as electrifying and captivating a personality as the third-generation competitor.

How he holds up between the ropes in his first real match since 2013, and whether he betrays Reigns to set up their dream match, bears watching.

Cody Rhodes

Rhodes will look to finish his story in Philadelphia when he challenges Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship Sunday night. First, he will team with Seth Rollins to battle The Tribal Chief and The Rock in a high-stakes tag team match in which his ability to compete without the incessant interference from The Bloodline is on the line.

Regardless of the outcome of either match, it is impossible to deny the impact Rhodes has had on the event and will continue to.

When it looked like WWE would change course and go with Rock vs. Reigns instead of booking Rhodes' rematch with The Head of the Table, fans lashed out. They took to social media, used #WeWantCody, and let their voices be heard.

The same fans who championed the YES! Movement in favor of Daniel Bryan a decade earlier ensured Rhodes would not be overlooked in favor of the shiny, Hollywood toy that had just walked back in through the front door.

A pure babyface who shakes hands, kisses babies, and promises to be the best man at random fans' weddings, he has an unbreakable bond with the audience; a bond those fans have paid back tenfold.

Rhodes' journey back to the main event is not just about his story, but the story of a relationship between performer and audience that proved undeniable.

Even in the face of a return from one of wrestling's greatest and most recognizable.

Seth "Freakin" Rollins

The reigning world heavyweight champion, Rollins will have one of the biggest nights of his career at WrestleMania 40.

First, he will stand side-by-side with Rhodes in battle against Reigns and The Rock in the main event of Saturday's portion of the show. From there, he will defend his title against Drew McIntyre in a match that got even more interesting with the revelation that shared rival CM Punk will be on commentary for the encounter.

Long overlooked and overshadowed by bigger and brighter stars, despite his consistent excellence and unwavering popularity, The Visionary has earned this opportunity.

That he overcame a torn meniscus, putting in the work to rehab the injury in time for him to compete on the grand stage, only enhances how deserving he is of the spotlight that is about to come his way.

There are understandably questions about his trustworthiness; if Rhodes can truly count on Rollins to be there for him or if The American Nightmare is fixing to be the latest Superstar betrayed by the world champ for his benefit.

Regardless, Rollins is going to be one of the most prominent stars throughout the weekend; a virtuoso performer who absolutely should be in that position.

Roman Reigns

Superstars have tried and failed for four years to unseat Reigns at the head of the table.

Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, Jey Uso, Edge, Daniel Bryan, Cesaro, Rey Mysterio, Brock Lesnar, Drew McIntyre, Seth Rollins...all have fallen at the feet of The Tribal Chief as he built and sustained the most significant championship run since Hulkamania ran wild from 1984-88.

That he has been the architect of one of the greatest storylines in WWE history alongside Paul Heyman, that being The Bloodline, only solidifies his legacy.

That historic reign as champion could very well come to an end in Philadelphia. If so, it would be the most impactful outcome of the entire show.

Reigns defends against Rhodes in a rematch of their underrated classic from a year ago, the ultimate conclusion to both Superstars' stories. If the champion drops his title, it will be the end of a reign unlike anyone ever imagined being possible in this era of professional wrestling.

Attention spans are too short. Fans demand new, now. There is no way WWE Creative can manufacture a story that will hold the audience's interest long enough to warrant keeping a title on Reigns.

Except they did and rode a tidal wave of historic business to the bank.

Reigns has been the central figure of all that WWE has done creatively in its main event scene. His story has elevated every Superstar around him and helped create stars out of competitors like Jey Uso and Sami Zayn, both of whom have key roles on the WrestleMania card.

Whether he wins or loses on Sunday, April 7, the second-generation star will undeniably have an impact on the broadcast.

Not to mention the tone of social media in its wake.
