Former BYU star and NBA guard Jimmer Fredette was one of four players named to Team USA's 3x3 men's basketball squad for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

Fredette, who played for five different NBA teams across six seasons after a memorable collegiate career at BYU, is undoubtedly the most widely known member of Team USA.

He will be joined by Canyon Barry, who played in the G League and is the son of Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Barry. The roster is rounded out by 3x3 veterans Kareem Maddox and Dylan Travis.

The quartet of Fredette, Barry, Maddox and Travis has been playing together for quite some time, and they have enjoyed tremendous success as a unit.

After winning gold in the 2023 Pan American Games and silver in the 2023 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, the decision was made for that foursome to represent the United States in the Olympic Games.

The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo marked the first time 3x3 basketball was part of the Olympic program. While the United States women's team won gold, the men's team failed to qualify.

In 2024, the United States men's team has a great opportunity to medal, especially after its strong performance at the World Cup.

If Team USA does medal, it will likely be thanks in large part to a huge performance from Fredette.

The 35-year-old veteran still stands out as one of the best college basketball players of the past couple of decades, as he was named National College Player of the Year in 2011 after averaging 28.9 points per game as a senior.

Fredette went 10th overall in the 2011 NBA draft, but he was never able to establish himself as an NBA regular despite his shooting prowess.

Overall, Fredette appeared in 241 regular-season games for the Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns, averaging 6.0 points, 1.4 assists and 1.0 rebound in 13.3 minutes per contest.

Fredette achieved much greater success in the professional ranks outside the NBA, including being a G League All-Star, a Greek League champion and a Chinese Basketball Association International MVP.

Since 2022, Fredette has shifted his focus from traditional basketball to 3x3, and it has paid dividends, as he is already among the best 3x3 players in the world.

Fredette's NBA career did not go according to plan, but leading Team USA to a gold medal win in Paris would be his crowning achievement in the sport of basketball.
