NFL Announces 2 Christmas Day Games Will Be Scheduled on Wednesday for 2024 Season

Even though Christmas Day will take place on a Wednesday in 2024, the NFL will have festive matchups once again on the upcoming schedule.

Per Mark Maske of the Washington Post, NFL vice president of media distribution Hans Schroeder said Tuesday that there will be two Christmas Day games in 2024.

According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, the huge ratings drawn by Christmas Day games have prompted the NFL to reverse its previous stance on not holding games on Wednesdays.

The Wall Street Journal's Andrew Beaton first reported the news Tuesday.

The NFL plays weekly games on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays, plus it usually plays Saturday games late in the season.

Last season, the NFL began the annual tradition of playing a game on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

The league has attempted to avoid playing games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays due to the scheduling issues it can create, but it proved capable of doing so during the COVID-19 pandemic when positive tests forced the NFL to move games to atypical days on a few occasions.

To prevent teams from playing on short weeks, the NFL may have to have the teams playing on Christmas in 2024 play Thursday night the week before.

Another option would be to spread out the bye weeks more. Byes are usually done by that point in the season, but the NFL could extend them so that the teams playing on Christmas are on a bye the previous week.

The NFL is king when it comes to the popularity of major sports leagues in the United States, and that was apparent on Christmas Day 2023.

Per Eric Fisher of Front Office Sports, the early Christmas Day 2023 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders was watched by an average of 29.2 million viewers, which made it the most-watched Christmas Day game in 34 years.

Fisher (h/t Ayrton Ostly of USA Today) added that the Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants averaged 29 million viewers and the San Francisco 49ers vs. Baltimore Ravens averaged 27.1 million viewers as well.

The 49ers vs. Ravens game was the most-watched Monday Night Football game in 27 years.

With the NFL smashing records on Christmas Day 2023, it is understandable why the league is willing to move some things around to ensure that Christmas football is back for 2024.
