Caleb Williams Praised as 'Outstanding' by Bears' Eberflus: 'Everything Looks Great'

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus was highly complimentary of USC quarterback Caleb Williams on Tuesday when asked about the interactions he has had with the potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Speaking to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Eberflus divulged that he and other members of the Bears contingent had dinner with Williams prior to his USC pro day, adding: "He's an outstanding young man, and everything looks great in terms of his personality, his character, his football knowledge."

Eberflus stopped short of declaring that the Bears will take Williams first overall, but all signs point toward that being the case after Chicago traded previous starting quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers two weeks ago.

After seeing quite a bit of game action at Oklahoma in 2021, Williams followed head coach Lincoln Riley to USC in 2022 and was named the unquestioned starter for the Trojans.

Williams exploded in his first full collegiate season as a starter, completing 66.6 percent of his passes for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns and five interceptions, while also rushing for 382 yards and 10 scores en route to being named the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner.

While Williams seemed like a strong bet to join legendary Ohio State running back Archie Griffin as the only two-time Heisman Trophy winners, it didn't come to fruition due to LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels' huge year in 2023.

Even so, Williams enjoyed another highly productive campaign, completing 68.6 percent of his passing attempts for 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and five picks, plus 142 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.

Williams has been viewed as the likely No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft since the 2022 season, and nothing that has happened since then has changed that.

Of course, the Bears have likely been doing their homework on other quarterbacks in the draft, including Daniels, North Carolina's Drake Maye and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, all of whom are standing out as likely top-10 picks.

The Washington Commanders picking at No. 2 and New England Patriots picking at No. 3 also have significant quarterback needs, and they will have their choice between Daniels, Maye and McCarthy provided the Bears take Williams.

Chicago arguably hasn't had a truly great quarterback since four-time NFL champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer Sid Luckman in the 1940s, so there is a great deal of pressure on the organization to get the next quarterback selection right.

The Bears are the only active NFL franchise to have never had a quarterback throw for 4,000 or more yards in a single season, but Williams undoubtedly has the skill set to end that drought.

Chicago already has a strong set of skill-position players in place in the form of running back D'Andre Swift, wide receivers D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen, and tight end Cole Kmet, and Williams could be the missing piece that puts the Bears over the top and makes them a playoff team once again.
