NHL Playoff Picture 2024: Updated Standings and Bracket Outlook

Joe Tansey

Seven NHL teams enter Tuesday's games with either 97 or 98 points.

The Presidents' Trophy race, as well as the competition for the No. 1 seeds in the Eastern and Western Conferences, should go down to the final few days of the regular season.

In the East, the Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins are tied atop the Atlantic Division, while the New York Rangers are a single point ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars are knotted at 97 points atop the Central Division in the West.

The Vancouver Canucks are the only division leader with some cushion in the standings. They are still fighting for the Presidents' Trophy and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

The East owns the more competitive wild-card race. As many as seven teams can make a case they are still alive in the hunt for a postseason berth.

Florida, Boston, the New York Rangers and Carolina are safely positioned into the top two spots in their respective divisions.

All four teams will likely hold home-ice advantage in the first round barring a collapse down the stretch.

The competition between those four teams will be for the top spot in their respective divisions and for home-ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Boston and Florida have two games left against each other, with one in Florida on Tuesday. The Rangers and Hurricanes have played all their regular-season matchups.

The top seed in each division is huge because it comes with a matchup against a wild-card team. The top spot in the conference is even bigger because the second-best division winner is currently lined up to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round.

Tampa Bay is only four points back of the Toronto Maple Leafs for third place in the Atlantic, but even if those teams swap spots, a dangerous matchup awaits the second-best division winner.

The Washington Capitals can solidify their position as the second wild-card team with a win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.

Detroit might play itself out of the wild-card race in the next week, as it has a four-game road trip against Washington, Carolina, Florida and Tampa Bay.

The Islanders, Devils, Sabres and Penguins all need strong weeks to capitalize on Detroit's brutal schedule and put pressure on Washington for the last wild-card position.

Colorado and Dallas are locked in a battle for the Central Division

The Avalanche hold the edge based on remaining schedule, as the Stars play five of their next six on the road with the lone home game coming against the Edmonton Oilers.

Seven of Colorado's final 11 games are in Denver, and it owns a game in hand on the Stars.

Vancouver is in much better shape to win the Pacific with a 10-point buffer on the Oilers.

Edmonton does have three games in hand on the Canucks, but it's not trending in the right direction with three losses in its last five games.

The Nashville Predators' five-game winning streak and Vegas Golden Knights' three-game winning run placed both teams in strong positions in the wild-card race.

Vegas' win over the St. Louis Blues on Monday created further separation in the race for the final playoff spot.

Every other team in wild-card contention either lost their last game or is currently on a losing streak.

Nashville and Vegas' focus may be centered more on catching the third-place teams in their respective divisions.

Nashville is five points back of the Winnipeg Jets, while Vegas is two points adrift of the Los Angeles Kings.
