Browns' Team Needs to Fill in 2024 NFL Draft

Joe Tansey

The Cleveland Browns enter NFL draft season in better shape with their 2024 roster construction than at the start of offseason.

The Browns got deeper at wide receiver with the Jerry Jeudy trade, so that need should a take a back seat in draft preparations.

Cleveland still has a handful of other needs it has to address, but it needs to be smart in the draft process since it only has five draft selections.

The Browns will not appear on the clock until the No. 54 overall pick, and at that point, they need to get the pick right to address at least one of their remaining primary needs.

Injuries have taken their toll on Cleveland's top starting offensive tackles.

Jack Conklin missed more games than he played in two of the last three seasons and Jedrick Wills only made eight starts in 2023.

Cleveland should target an offensive lineman in either the second or third round to have some more insurance for their pair of starters at offensive tackle.

The problem with that is the best offensive tackles in the draft class will be long gone by the time the Browns select at No. 54.

Bleacher Report's NFL scouting department predicted seven offensive linemen would be chosen in the second round in their latest projection. Five of them were chosen before the Browns pick.

A trade up just a few spots in the second round may be beneficial if the Browns see offensive line depth as their primary need to fill in the draft.

The Browns landed Jordan Hicks and Devin Bush in free agency, but they could still push for a linebacker in the draft.

Clemson's Jeremiah Trotter Jr. comes with NFL pedigree and success at one of the country's top college football programs.

Trotter is a projected second-round pick. B/R's NFL scouting department mocked him to No. 51 in their latest projection.

Trotter could be available for the Browns at No. 55 and he could make a similar impact as Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, a second-round pick himself, in the middle of the Browns defense.

Texas A&M's Edgerrin Cooper and NC State's Payton Wilson would be other players to consider in that range of the draft.

Running Back

The Browns need to be proactive at running back.

Nick Chubb will be back for the start of the 2024 season, but at 28 and coming off an ACL tear, he is closer to the end of his Browns career than the start.

The 2024 running back draft class is not fantastic, but there are still gems to find in the middle rounds.

Florida State's Trey Benson, Wisconsin's Braelon Allen and Kentucky's Ray Davis are all predicted to be third-round picks by B/R's NFL scouting department.

Benson recorded back-to-back 900-yard seasons for the Seminoles, Allen had two 1,200-yard campaigns at Wisconsin and Davis was a 1,000-yard rusher at two different schools.

The Browns could add one of those players to the mix at running back to compete with Jerome Ford, D'Onta Foreman and Nyheim Hines for the backup job in training camp.
