Cody Rhodes vs. Rock Coming Soon, Likely WrestleMania 40 Additions, More Quick Takes

Graham GSM Matthews

With every passing week, Cody Rhodes vs. The Rock feels more and more like the main attraction at WrestleMania 40 instead of The American Nightmare vs. Roman Reigns—despite that not being WWE's intention.

The scheduled Night 2 main event between Reigns and Rhodes will undoubtedly deliver, but months' worth of trash-talking between the challenger and Rock has led to that becoming the more exciting bout between the two. They will collide in tag team action on Night 1, but a one-on-one encounter seems inevitable.

The WrestleMania card continues to grow, and with less than two weeks to go until the event, more matchups are bound to be added. Several Superstars are conspicuous by their absence on the star-studded lineup and still have a chance of being involved.

Two matches in particular should be confirmed in the coming days after what was teased on the latest editions of Raw and SmackDown.

This installment of Quick Takes will delve into the most likely WrestleMania 40 additions, All Elite Wrestling's next tag team champions, why less is more with gold in AEW, and more.

Rhodes vs. Rock Is a Must-Book Main Event for WWE in 2024

For as exceptional as The Rock has been in the heel role since returning to WWE at the onset of 2024, he has overshadowed Roman Reigns as the company's biggest bad guy and as the ultimate threat to Cody Rhodes.

He's gone so far as to refer to himself as "The Final Boss," which directly conflicts with Reigns being the undisputed WWE universal champion for almost four years.

Rhodes beating The Tribal Chief to take that title should be considered a certainty at this point as it's the only outcome that makes sense.

WWE can then keep The American Nightmare rolling by having him focus solely on The People's Champion and building to a major showdown between them in the future while Reigns takes an extended hiatus from television.

Leading speculation among fans has been that the Rhodes-Rock beef will be revealed as a ruse with The Great One costing Reigns his prized possession on Night 2. But that would undermine what should be a career-defining moment for The American Nightmare and erase all of the excellent heat he has generated with Rock in recent months.

The hype surrounding Rhodes vs. Rock is such that WWE would be doing its audience a disservice by not booking this marquee main event eventually.

Less Is More with Championships in AEW

Kazuchika Okada's Continental Championship victory on last Wednesday's Dynamite was a memorable moment, but the clarification that the American Triple Crown itself wasn't on the line only reinforced the fact that AEW has too many titles.

The Rainmaker is the perfect fit as continental champion, but Eddie Kingston continues to hold the ROH World Championship. Essentially, the creation of the Continental Championship late last year was AEW's way of introducing yet another unnecessary belt.

This is in addition to the TNT Championship and the International Championship, which were recently won by Adam Copeland and Roderick Strong, respectively. The AEW roster is undoubtedly stacked at the moment, but it's difficult for these belts to mean as much as they should with there being so many of them.

The power rankings that were recently resurrected have already fallen by the wayside, and title shots are given away at random. More of the names competing for these championships would be better suited in the main event mix chasing the top title at this point.

Some of AEW's best storytelling has come when there were only three or four titles in the first year of the company's existence, so returning to that less-is-more approach would greatly increase the value of each one.

Who Will Win Vacant AEW World Tag Team Championship?

Sting's retirement as AEW world tag team champion created the need for new titleholders to be crowned via a tournament that is now underway.

Blackpool Combat Club are the most glaring omission from the bracket following their defeat of FTR at Revolution. If their absence from television was always planned, per Fightful Select, then the decision to have them win at the pay-per-view was a short-sighted one.

Of the eight teams set to take part, The Young Bucks have to be considered the odds-on favorite with a win over FTR in the finals. No other tandem is remotely as credible at the moment and that will be the biggest obstacle the division will need to overcome once the tourney has concluded.

The Bucks becoming champions for the third time will make their Elite alliance with Kazuchika Okada a golden trio and cement them as the top act in AEW, but more depth and direction is needed for the tag team ranks in order for their reign to truly matter.

Getting some new blood in the mix could be exactly what's needed to freshen things up.

WWE or AEW: Where Should Motor City Machine Guns Sign?

As of April 1, The Motor City Machine Guns will officially be free agents, per PWInsider.

Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin have been one of the top tag teams in the world for nearly two decades, primarily plying their trade in TNA Wrestling and Ring of Honor. They've never worked as a duo in WWE and have made only one appearance for AEW at All Out 2022.

All signs point them being done with TNA and looking to take their talents elsewhere. Realistically, they can't go wrong with either WWE or AEW given the momentum both promotions have at the moment.

AEW has specialized in tag team wrestling in the last five years, and MCMG have history with a handful of tandems there, most notably The Young Bucks. As mentioned, though, AEW has work to do when it comes to making many of those teams matter.

The WWE tag team scene is far from flawless, but there's clearly been a renewed focus on tag team wrestling on Raw and SmackDown as of late, and MCMG would be an outstanding addition to either brand. Even a brief run in NXT where they could mix it up with the newer names would suit them well.

With there being no guarantee that Shelley and Sabin won't be lost in the shuffle in AEW, WWE is the better bet for MCMG and where they'd have the best chance of success.

The Next Likely Additions to WrestleMania 40 Card

With two weeks until WrestleMania 40, last-minute matches are still being added with WWE insider WrestleVotes indicating that the company is looking to hold seven per night.

One contest that is virtually guaranteed to be confirmed soon is Rey Mysterio and Andrade vs. Santos Escobar and Dominik Mysterio.

All four men appeared to be on track to face each other in singes matches at The Show of Shows, but combining them into one loaded tag team bout is likely an effort by WWE to cut down on the overall amount of matches for the two nights.

Rey and Dominik clashed at last year's event and Escobar briefly crossed paths with Andrade during the men's Royal Rumble, so it's hardly a random development. Even without anything at stake, it's sure to be a thrilling affair given the level of talent involved.

Another tag team match that would make sense is Bianca Belair, Naomi and potentially Jade Cargill vs. Dakota Kai and The Kabuki Warriors.

Belair and Naomi have made enemies out of Damage CTRL recently, and Cargill teased having an issue with the group earlier in March during a backstage segment on SmackDown.

It would not only serve as a stellar showcase for six of SmackDown's finest female talents but also extend Belair's undefeated 'Mania streak and ensure Cargill has an unforgettable debut on The Grandest Stage of Them All.
