4 Fights We Need to See After UFC on ESPN 53

Tom Taylor

Rose Namajunas is officially a contender in the UFC flyweight division.

The former strawweight champion competed in her second fight in the weight class in the main event of Saturday's UFC on ESPN 53 card in Las Vegas, taking on Brazil's Amanda Ribas, who has also drifted between the two weight classes throughout her career.

After five rounds of flyweight action, Namajunas won a unanimous decision, rebounding from a loss to Manon Fiorot in her debut in the division, and a loss to Carla Esparza in her last strawweight fight.

Her next move is unclear, but she will certainly land in the flyweight Top 10 when the rankings are updated this week, and from there, she has a number of compelling matchup options at her fingertips.

Outside Namajunas and Ribas, there were no ranked fighters on Saturday's bill, which is unfortunate, but also par for the course for cards at the UFC's Apex facility. The good news is that what the card lacked in star power, it made up for with flashy finishes, including some impressive performances from former middleweight contender Edmen Shahbazyan, and featherweights Youssef Zalal and Julian Erosa. Like Namajunas, all three can look forward to big opportunities in their next fights.

Keep scrolling for four fights we're hoping will be made in the aftermath of Saturday's event in Las Vegas.

Rose Namajunas vs. Maycee Barber

After beating the UFC's No. 8-ranked flyweight in Ribas, Namajunas will most likely be ranked in the division's Top 10 later this week. As a new face in the division, she has a ton of fresh matchup options, but if she gets her way, she'll fight Maycee Barber next.

"I think she's a savage," Namajunas said post-fight, setting her sights on Barber. "You know, she's a big girl, she's strong. She's just like a bully in there. I knew her when she was really young and she's a lot different now. And, you know, she kind of like, called me out back when she was younger and things like that. So, you know, I think it's kind of funny, but she's really tough. That would definitely motivate me and get me going every day because I know she throws with really bad intentions."

This fight seems like a great choice for both women. For Namajunas, it's a chance to take another big step up the flyweight ladder with a win over the division's No. 4 contender. Barber, meanwhile, would stand to cement her own status as one of the division's top contenders with a win over one of the best female fighters ever.

This also looks like the best option available for Barber, as she is still a few steps behind the likes of Erin Blanchfield, Fiorot and Valentina Shevchenko in the race for a crack at champion Alexa Grasso, and all of those women are occupied with other matchups at the moment.

Amanda Ribas vs. Casey O'Neill

After her loss to Namajunas on Saturday, Ribas is now a tough 4-4 in her last eight fights. She has been much too inconsistent to be considered a serious title threat; however, her wins over the likes of Virna Jandiroba, Viviane Araujo and Luana Pinheiro are proof that she is still capable of beating many of her rivals in the Top 15.

From here, we would like to see Ribas attempt to get back on track against Scotland's Casey O'Neill. O'Neill won her first four bouts in the Octagon and looked like a future flyweight title contender. Unfortunately for her, things have fallen apart in her last two fights, as she first lost a decision to Jennifer Maia, and more recently, suffered a second-round submission loss to Ariane Lipski.

Whomever O'Neill fights next, she will have her back to the wall, as a third straight loss might result in her release from the UFC. A fight against a proven veteran like Ribas would be a great opportunity for her to get things back on track, while the fight would simultaneously give Ribas the chance to prove she still belongs in the flyweight Top 10.

Edmen Shahbazyan vs. Rodolfo Vieira

Edmen Shahbazyan was once one of the hottest young contenders in the middleweight division and was even touted as a future title challenger by the champion at the time, Israel Adesanya. Things have changed.

Shahbazyan entered his UFC on ESPN 53 main card fight with AJ Dobson with losses in three of his last four fights—all of them decisive. He desperately needed a win in Vegas, and while he dealt with some adversity early in his fight, he ultimately got the result he wanted with a dramatic, come-from-behind knockout in the waning moments of the first round.

The win over Dobson will not be enough to push Shahbazyan back into the middleweight Top 15, but if he can put together a win streak, it's possible he will still live up to the hype he had earlier in his career.

We'd like to see him attempt to make it two in a row against dangerous BJJ specialist Rodolfo Vieira. Vieira has won two straight fights by submission and is probably a win or two away from the rankings himself. He's a tough style matchup for Shahbazyan, who has struggled with grapplers before, but it's a winnable fight for both men, and a great clash of styles.

Youssef Zalal vs. Julian Erosa

Saturday's card in Las Vegas featured some excellent finishes. Two of the best of the bunch came courtesy of featherweights Julian Erosa and Youssef Zalal.

Erosa was up first, taking on Ricardo Ramos. He ate some huge shots early, but in a remarkable display of toughness, surged back to submit his foe before the first round was over.

Several fights later, it was Zalal's turn. "The Moroccan Devil" was matched up with the always entertaining Billy Quarantillo on the card and became the first man to submit his opponent, sealing the deal with a second-round rear-naked choke.

After their wins in Las Vegas, Erosa and Zalal are at roughly the same place in the featherweight pecking order. They're also on the same schedule, having scored first-round finishes on the same night.

From here, it only makes sense to match them up against each other and see who is ready to take the next step in their crowded, dangerous weight class.
