Zach Wilson Trade Rumors: Landing Spots 'Dwindling' as Contract Is 'a Deterrent'

Joseph Zucker

It probably won't take much to pry quarterback Zach Wilson away from the New York Jets, but the financial cost of a trade is an overriding concern for prospective suitors, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

"Wilson has permission to speak to teams about a trade, but his salary (a guaranteed $5.5 million) is a deterrent, not to mention his checkered body of work," Cimini reported. "He's probably hoping for his release, so he can find a job with no strings attached. It'll be interesting to see how long the Jets hold out hope for a trade."

Cimini added the market for Wilson is "dwindling" since the Kansas City Chiefs are the only team with an obvious void at backup quarterback.

Once the Chicago Bears only netted a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick for Justin Fields, it immediately became clear the Jets were facing a massive uphill climb to offload their young signal-caller.

Wilson has fared even worse than Fields on the field, throwing for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions through three years, while having he same hurdles presented by his rookie contract.

Beyond a sizable $11.2 million cap hit for 2024, he has a $22.4 million club option for 2025 with a deadline of May 2 to make a decision one way or the other.

A team that acquires the 24-year-old is basically left with one of two decisions. It can simply decline the club option, in which case he'd be an expensive one year rental with the potential for his value to climb significantly should he make a breakthrough (i.e. the Daniel Jones). Reworking Wilson's deal in lieu of triggering the option like the Green Bay Packers did with Jordan Love is the other path, which would still carry some risk in terms of his 2025 payout outpacing his actual value.

Especially when there's seemingly so little upside, it's difficult to see why a general manager would feel compelled to step up to the plate and make a trade for Wilson.
