It appears the iconic 1996 film Happy Gilmore may be getting a sequel.

Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the sports comedy, revealed during an appearance on Audacy's 92.3 The Fan on Friday that Adam Sandler, who played Happy Gilmore, recently showed him a draft of the script for Happy Gilmore 2.

McDonald said, per Caitlyn Holroyd of theScore:

"I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, 'McDonald, you're gonna love this.' I said, 'What?' He says, 'How 'bout that,' (and) he shows me the first draft of 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Maybe you should cut that out because I don't wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, 'Well, that would be awesome.' So, it's in the works. Fans demand it, dammit."

Sandler previously expressed interest in creating a sequel to the film, saying during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show in 2021 that he would approve the project.

The original movie follows Sandler's character, Happy, an aspiring professional hockey player who discovers a talent for golf and competes in a golf tournament to save his grandmother's house.

Happy Gilmore made nearly $40 million at the worldwide box office when it debuted, per Zack Sharf of Variety.
