MLB Fantasy Baseball 2024: Top 100 Big Board, Positional Rankings, Top Sleepers

Joel Reuter

It's fantasy baseball draft season once again, with 2024 spring training wrapping up and Opening Day right around the corner.

Before we dive into this year's fantasy rankings, a bit of clarification is needed.

First, everything is based on 10- or 12-team mixed leagues with standard five-by-five rotisserie scoring for hitters (batting average, runs, home runs, RBI, stolen bases) and pitchers (wins, ERA, WHIP, strikeouts, saves).

Second, lineup construction assumes 22 active roster positions, consisting of one each for catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, corner infield, middle infield and utility, along with five outfielders and nine pitchers.

Finally, to be eligible at a particular position, players must have accrued at least 10 games there in 2023 or be projected to play there regularly in 2024.

With that established, it's on to the Big Board, followed by our positional rankings and, finally, five deep sleepers.

Top 20 Catchers

1. Adley Rutschman, BAL
2. J.T. Realmuto, PHI
3. Will Smith, LAD
4. William Contreras, MIL
5. Yainer Diaz, HOU
6. Cal Raleigh, SEA
7. Sean Murphy, ATL

10. Francisco Álvarez, NYM
11. Jonah Heim, TEX
12. Mitch Garver, SEA
13. Gabriel Moreno, ARI
14. Keibert Ruiz, WAS
15. Logan O'Hoppe, LAA
16. Bo Naylor, CLE
17. Luis Campusano, SD
18. Alejandro Kirk, TOR
19. Tyler Stephenson, CIN
20. Ryan Jeffers, MIN

Overvalued: Salvador Pérez, KC (ADP: 136)

Pérez is still riding the hype of the 48-homer, 121-RBI season he posted in 2021 when he was a fantasy baseball juggernaut. The 33-year-old is starting to show signs of age after logging a .714 OPS with 23 home runs and 80 RBI last season, and more regression could be coming.

Undervalued: Shea Langeliers, OAK (ADP: 329)

The prospect centerpiece of the deal that sent Matt Olson to Atlanta, Langeliers had a 22-homer, 63-RBI season in his first year as Oakland's starting catcher. The 26-year-old still has the potential to take another step forward at the plate.

First Basemen

Top 25 First Basemen

1. Freddie Freeman, LAD
2. Matt Olson, ATL
3. Bryce Harper, PHI
4. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., TOR
5. Pete Alonso, NYM
6. Cody Bellinger, CHC
7. Paul Goldschmidt, STL
8. Nolan Jones, COL
9. Luis Arraez, MIA
10. Yandy Díaz, TB
11. Christian Walker, ARI
12. Triston Casas, BOS
13. Isaac Paredes, TB
14. Spencer Steer, CIN
15. Josh Naylor, CLE
16. Spencer Torkelson, DET
17. Anthony Santander, BAL
18. Alec Bohm, PHI
19. Salvador Pérez, KC
20. Rhys Hoskins, MIL
21. Nathaniel Lowe, TEX
22. Christian Encarnacion-Strand, CIN
23. Vinnie Pasquantino, KC
24. Jeimer Candelario, CIN
25. Anthony Rizzo, NYY

Overvalued: Christian Encarnacion-Strand, CIN (ADP: 136)

With Noelvi Marte suspended for the first 80 games of the season following a positive PED suspension, Encarnacion-Strand should see regular at-bats, and his power is legit. Still, drafting him ahead of guys like Rhys Hoskins and Nathaniel Lowe feels like a stretch.

Undervalued: Nolan Schanuel, LAA (ADP: 358)

The Angels put Schanuel on the fast track after he was taken No. 11 overall in the 2023 draft, and he made his MLB debut on Aug. 18. The 22-year-old hit .275 with a .402 on-base percentage and more walks (20) than strikeouts (19), and he has only scratched the surface of his power potential.

Second Basemen

Top 25 Second Basemen

1. Mookie Betts, LAD
2. Marcus Semien, TEX
3. Ozzie Albies, ATL
4. José Altuve, HOU
5. Ketel Marte, ARI
6. Ha-Seong Kim, SD
7. Nico Hoerner, CHC
8. Luis Arraez, MIA
9. Xander Bogaerts, SD
10. Matt McLain, CIN
11. Gleyber Torres, NYY
12. Spencer Steer, CIN
13. Isaac Paredes, TB
14. Nolan Gorman, STL
15. Bryson Stott, PHI
16. Zack Gelof, OAK
17. Christopher Morel, CHC
18. Thairo Estrada, SF
19. Jackson Holliday, BAL
20. Luis Rengifo, LAA
21. Andrés Giménez, CLE
22. Jeff McNeil, NYM
23. Edouard Julien, MIN
24. Jorge Polanco, SEA
25. Jake Cronenworth, SD

Overvalued: Andrés Giménez, CLE (ADP: 117)

Giménez hit .297 with a .371 on-base percentage during his breakout 2022 season, but that dipped to a .251 average and .314 on-base percentage last year. He still provided some power (15 HR) and speed (30 SB), but we have likely seen his peak performance.

Undervalued: Jeff McNeil, NYM (ADP: 304)

McNeil is just a year removed from winning the 2022 NL batting title with a .326 average, and while he doesn't have a ton of over-the-fence power, he did tally 25 doubles, 10 home runs, 55 RBI and 10 steals in 2023. Drafting him behind Whit Merrifield, Gavin Lux, DJ LeMahieu and others seems silly.

Third Basemen

José Ramírez Norm Hall/Getty Images

Top 25 Third Basemen

1. José Ramírez, CLE
2. Austin Riley, ATL
3. Rafael Devers, BOS
4. Gunnar Henderson, BAL
5. Elly De La Cruz, CIN
6. Manny Machado, SD
7. Alex Bregman, HOU
8. Nolan Arenado, STL
9. Royce Lewis, MIN
10. Ha-Seong Kim, SD
11. Isaac Paredes, TB
12. Spencer Steer, CIN
13. Josh Jung, TEX
14. Jake Burger, MIA
15. Alec Bohm, PHI
16. Max Muncy, LAD
17. Nolan Gorman, STL
18. Ke'Bryan Hayes, PIT
19. Matt Chapman, SF
20. Luis Rengifo, LAA
21. Jeimer Candelario, CIN
22. Eugenio Suarez, ARI
23. Ryan McMahon, COL
24. DJ LeMahieu, NYY
25. Maikel Garcia, KC

Overvalued: Royce Lewis, MIN (ADP: 54)

Lewis was great when he played last season, hitting .309/.372/.548 with 15 home runs and 52 RBI in 58 games. However, the 24-year-old has been extremely injury prone throughout his career, and using a fifth-round pick on him is a risky proposition based on a strong two-month sample size.

Undervalued: J.D. Davis, OAK (ADP: 406)

Going from San Francisco to Oakland will take a bite out of Davis' RBI opportunities, but he should be an everyday player in the Athletics lineup. He had 23 doubles, 18 home runs and 69 RBI last season, and there are a dozen players being drafted ahead of him at third base that he is a safe bet to outperform.

Shortstops

Top 25 Shortstops

1. Mookie Betts, LAD
2. Bobby Witt Jr., KC
3. Trea Turner, PHI
4. Corey Seager, TEX
5. Francisco Lindor, NYM
6. Gunnar Henderson, BAL
7. Bo Bichette, TOR
8. Elly De La Cruz, CIN
9. CJ Abrams, WAS
10. Ha-Seong Kim, SD
11. Nico Hoerner, CHC
12. Oneil Cruz, PIT
13. Xander Bogaerts, SD
14. Matt McLain, CIN
15. Dansby Swanson, CHC
16. J.P. Crawford, SEA
17. Anthony Volpe, NYY
18. Trevor Story, BOS
19. Carlos Correa, MIN
20. Willy Adames, MIL
21. Thairo Estrada, SF
22. Jackson Holliday, BAL
23. Luis Rengifo, LAA
24. Jeremy Peña, HOU
25. Ezequiel Tovar, COL

Overvalued: Anthony Volpe, NYY (ADP: 129)

With 21 home runs and 24 steals during his rookie season, Volpe has legitimate future star upside. However, he also hit just .209 with a 27.8 percent strikeout rate, so he still has a ways to go before he is a well-rounded fantasy option. Let someone else pay the Yankees' premium.

Undervalued: José Caballero, TB (ADP: 419)

Caballero posted a .343 on-base percentage and stole 26 bases last season while being used primarily as a defensive replacement for the Seattle Mariners. Now, he will break camp as Tampa Bay's starting shortstop after logging just 280 plate appearances in 104 games in 2023.

Outfielders

29. Jordan Walker, STL
30. Seiya Suzuki, CHC
31. Anthony Santander, BAL
32. Marcell Ozuna, ATL
33. Esteury Ruiz, OAK
34. Riley Greene, DET
35. Chas McCormick, HOU
36. Jorge Soler, SF
37. Jackson Chourio, MIL
38. Wyatt Langford, TEX
39. Ian Happ, CHC
40. James Outman, LAD
41. Brandon Nimmo, NYM
42. Christopher Morel, CHC
43. Jarren Duran, BOS
44. Eloy Jiménez, CWS
45. Tommy Edman, STL
46. Masataka Yoshida, BOS
47. Steven Kwan, CLE
48. Daulton Varsho, TOR
49. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., ARI
50. Jarred Kelenic, ATL

Overvalued: Nolan Jones, COL (ADP: 52)

Jones had a 20-homer, 20-steal rookie season in only 106 games while hitting .297/.389/.542 last year, so it's not hard to see why he is going off the board so early in fantasy drafts. But there are some serious regression red flags in his batted-ball profile.

Undervalued: Garrett Mitchell, MIL (ADP: 396)

Mitchell hit .311/.373/.459 with three doubles, two home runs and eight steals in 28 games as a late-season call-up in 2022. The 25-year-old was Milwaukee's starting center fielder to begin last season, but he suffered a left shoulder injury that ended up limiting him to 19 games. Now, he profiles as a post-hype breakout candidate.

40. Yu Darvish, SD
41. Cristian Javier, HOU
42. Mitch Keller, PIT
43. Nathan Eovaldi, TEX
44. Shōta Imanaga, CHC
45. José Berríos, TOR
46. Bryce Miller, SEA
47. Eduardo Rodríguez, ARI
48. Charlie Morton, ATL
49. Bailey Ober, MIN
50. Walker Buehler, LAD

Overvalued: Carlos Rodón, NYY (ADP: 166)

After putting up stellar numbers in 2021 and 2022, Rodón struggled mightily in the first season of a six-year, $162 million deal with the New York Yankees. The oft-injured lefty made just 14 starts, and he had a 6.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 64.1 innings when he did pitch. Taking him as a top-50 starter is simply not worth the risk.

Undervalued: Casey Mize, DET (ADP: 407)

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, Mize appeared to be turning a corner in 2021 when he had a 3.71 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 150.1 innings of work. Injuries cost him most of the 2022 season and all of the 2023 campaign, but he threw the ball well this spring and could make a run at AL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

7. Alexis Díaz, CIN
8. Raisel Iglesias, ATL
9. Devin Williams, MIL
10. David Bednar, PIT
11. Paul Sewald, ARI
12. Evan Phillips, LAD
13. Andrés Muñoz, SEA
14. Clay Holmes, NYY
15. Pete Fairbanks, TB
16. Ryan Helsley, STL
17. Tanner Scott, MIA
18. Adbert Alzolay, CHC
19. Kenley Jansen, BOS
20. Craig KImbrel, BAL
21. Carlos Estévez, LAA
22. José Leclerc, TEX
23. José Alvarado, PHI
24. Robert Suárez, SD
25. Alex Lange, DET

Overvalued: Devin Williams, MIL (ADP: 98)

When he's fully healthy, Williams is as overpowering as any closer in baseball. However, he is dealing with a nagging back issue that will keep him sidelined to start the year, and it will take him some time to build back up once he gets healthy. Guys like David Bednar and Paul Sewald below him are much safer options.

Undervalued: Tanner Scott, MIA (ADP: 139)

Scott had a 2.31 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 104 strikeouts in 78.0 innings while converting 12 of 16 save opportunities last season, and he is now the unquestioned closer in Miami. He has a chance to be a top-five closer in 2024.

*Note: Cole Ragans (KC), Michael King (SD), Ryan Pepiot (TB) and Nick Pivetta (BOS) all have relief pitcher eligibility, but the goal here was to highlight players who can help you in traditional reliever categories.
