Josh Dobbs, 49ers Agree to 1-Year Contract in NFL Free Agency After Vikings Stint

After losing Sam Darnold in free agency, the San Francisco 49ers have found their backup quarterback for the 2024 season.

Agent Mike McCartney wrote on X that his client has agreed to a one-year deal with the reigning NFC champions.

The Athletic provided more details about the contract, including $2.25 million fully guaranteed:

Darnold got a one-year deal worth up to $10 million from the Minnesota Vikings last week after Kirk Cousins agreed to join the Atlanta Falcons.

This left the 49ers in a position where they didn't have a reliable backup on the roster. They did retain Brandon Allen, who spent last season as their No. 3/emergency quarterback.

There was some buzz that Zach Wilson might be on San Francisco's radar in a trade with the New York Jets.

Instead, the 49ers were able to add a quarterback they have some familiarity with. While playing for the Arizona Cardinals last season, Dobbs had a solid game against San Francisco in Week 4. He went 28-of-41 for 265 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-16 loss.

The highlight of Dobbs' 2023 came on Nov. 5 in his first game as a member of the Minnesota Vikings. He was acquired by the club in a trade with the Cardinals six days earlier after Cousins' season-ending Achilles injury.

Dobbs went into the game in the first quarter after Jaren Hall suffered a concussion against the Atlanta Falcons. He didn't take a practice rep with the first-team offense all week and had to work on his snap cadence with the offensive line on the sidelines during the game.

The Vikings scored 21 second-half points to get a 31-28 victory over the Falcons. Dobbs capped off the comeback win with a touchdown pass to Brandon Powell with 20 seconds remaining.

Dobbs would go on to start the next four games for the Vikings. The 29-year-old finished the season with 2,464 passing yards, 421 rushing yards and accounted for 19 touchdowns in 13 games between Arizona and Minnesota.

San Francisco will likely have Dobbs serve as the primary backup to Brock Purdy next season, with Allen in the role of the No. 3 quarterback.
