NBA Rumors: Kyrie Irving Has 'Deep Desire' to Be on Team USA's 2024 Olympics Roster

After being left off the 2020 roster, Kyrie Irving is eyeing a return to the United States men's national team for the 2024 Olympics.

On FanDuel TV's Run it Back, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium said Irving has a "deep desire" to represent the U.S. in Paris this summer.

There is a large contingent of NBA superstars who have made it known they would like to take part in the 2024 Olympics. The 41-athlete player pool released in January included Irving, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards and Jayson Tatum.

Charania and Joe Vardon reported in September that James had been recruiting several players to join the squad. Irving wasn't cited among the group of players being recruited by his former teammate, but he did have "serious interest" in committing.

In a Feb. 28 report, Charania and Vardon noted USA Basketball was targeting James, Curry, Durant, Tatum, Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday and Joel Embiid as the "expected core" for the team barring injuries.

Embiid's status would be the most concerning at this point. The reigning NBA MVP hasn't played in a game since suffering a knee injury on Jan. 30 that required surgery, but there's some hope he will return to the court for the Philadelphia 76ers before the postseason begins.

Even though Irving has had two extended absences due to heel and thumb injuries, he could potentially hit the 60-game threshold during the NBA season for the second consecutive year. It would mark the first time he's done that since the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

Irving is a two-time gold medalist with Team USA. His first victory was at the 2014 FIBA World Cup, followed by a win at the 2016 Olympics. He started all eight games in Rio de Janeiro, averaging 11.4 points and a team-high 4.9 assists per game.
