WWE and AEW Backstage Rumors: Latest on Mercedes Moné, WWE PLE Start Time, and More

Erik Beaston

After months of speculation, Mercedes Moné made her All Elite Wrestling debut Wednesday night on Dynamite: Big Business and immediately set the tone for her run with the company.

The CEO was flashy and confident, and she had the fans eating out of the palm of her hand as she cut a promo before coming to the aid of Willow Nightingale in the show's closing moments.

Moné continues her momentous run at the forefront of this collection of wrestling rumors, which looks at the timing of her return.

Joining her is the latest on potential new starting times for WWE premium live events and what went into the decision from Tony Khan to make Kazuchika Okada a heel on his AEW debut.

Update on Mercedes Moné Signing with AEW

Mercedes Moné made her hotly anticipated debut in AEW Wednesday, and Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select provided insight on how the deal came together and the timeline:

"Sources confirmed to Fightful and Mat Men's Andrew Zarian that Mone has been on the AEW payroll for well over two months, with some sources [saying] that they believe the deal was effectively agreed upon back in December when Mercedes landed several trademarks in relation to her name. Those we have spoken to believe the contract is a multi-year deal. We're working to confirm that."

He continued:

"In addition, we're told that New Japan Pro-Wrestling expects to be factored into this deal, and they were under the impression as of January that they would be able to continue to work with Mercedes in a big way. Sources in the company said they hoped they could pick up where they left off with her last year, but that AEW would be her priority."

In regards to her conversations with WWE and when they effectively ended, Sapp reported it was in December and that, by January, company sources stated they "weren't interested in contract tampering with her anyway."

Moné's debut was treated like that of a major star whose acquisition is expected to take the promotion to the next level, a la CM Punk in 2021. She got the hometown welcome at TD Garden in Boston, was spotlighted at the show's start and end, and she looked like a game-changer.

Tony Khan has landed one of the most legitimate stars in wrestling of the last 10 years. How he builds on the momentum surrounding her arrival will be key. Allowing her to fade into the pack, as he has done with other star acquisitions, would be a major misstep that will attract critics.

If he can keep Moné front and center, and elevate the women's division as a whole, fans will have a chance to witness an element of AEW unlike any they have seen before.

WWE Looking at New Premium Live Event Start Times

Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com reported that WWE is looking at changing the start time of its premium live events to 7 p.m. ET, starting with WrestleMania 40 and continuing with Money in the Bank in July.

A change of this sort would allow the company to do one of two things: Add an hour of content to its PLEs or wrap things up earlier, before the typical 11 p.m. or 11:30 p.m. end time.

AEW has faced criticism for its frequently lengthy pay-per-views, which can start with a packed pre-show and stretch for five hours or more and end sometime after midnight, so one would assume WWE would not be looking to expand its run times.

If it did, it would presumably allow stars who typically may not appear on a PLE an opportunity to get more screen time in big-match situations.

It remains to be seen what WWE's plans are, and it likely won't matter if it can continue presenting a product as hot as it is currently. Keep fan demand for the top stars and stories in the company and they won't care what the reason is.

Report on Kazuchika Okada's AEW Heel Run

Kazuchika Okada made his AEW debut on the March 6 episode of Dynamite, turning heel and joining Matthew and Nicholas Jackson in a revamped version of The Elite.

Sapp reported "specifically we've heard Tony Khan has long been of the belief even before AEW that Okada can be a major heel star on American wrestling TV. Sources in AEW claimed that this past week's performances only solidified that and the company considered it a home run," and he cited his facial expressions as one reason for that belief.

Okada followed up his debut as a full-time member of the AEW roster on Collision, teaming with The Young Bucks in a victory over enhancement talent. The Elite then beat Eddie Kingston, Penta El Zero Miedo and PAC on Dynamite to continue their winning ways.

To this point, the fans have accepted Okada in the role while the creative forces in the company are setting the stage for The Rainmaker to battle Kenny Omega in a renewal of their epic New Japan Pro-Wrestling rivalry.

The Bucks fired Omega from The Elite, which severed ties between the EVPs and their former friend. How and when The Best Bout Machine will respond following his injury absence remains to be seen.
