Mercedes Moné's Value to AEW, WWE 2K24 Resets Bar For Video Games, More Quick Takes

Last Wednesday's Big Business edition of Dynamite saw Mercedes Moné become the latest "elite" addition to an already star-studded All Elite Wrestling roster and make an immediate impact with appearances bookending the show.

Fan speculation has already begun to run wild regarding how much of a needle-mover she'll be for the promotion in the long term, and while that remains to be seen, there can be no doubt her arrival can be crucial to improving the perception of the AEW women's division.

Women's wrestling remains at the forefront of WWE TV these days, especially on the road to WrestleMania with the title pictures on both Raw and SmackDown heating up.

Rhea Ripley and Becky Lynch have done an excellent job of giving their upcoming clash a "big fight feel," whereas Iyo Sky vs. Bayley doesn't feel remotely as it should for a feud that has been many months in the making.

This installment of Quick Takes will discuss how Damage CTRL can take their storyline to the next level, WWE 2K24 resetting the bar for wrestling video games, the rebuilding of Jay White being long overdue, and more.

Mercedes Moné Won't Be a Game-Changer for AEW but is a Valuable Asset

AEW's television ratings have largely gone unchanged for the last five years, indicating that no one person has been or is going to be a "game-changer" for them.

Certain competitors have had hot streaks, specifically CM Punk shortly after he signed in 2021, but there has yet to be anyone who has made a major difference consistently.

Mercedes Moné will be no exception in that respect, per the rating for the Big Business edition of Dynamite, but that doesn't make her any less of an important acquisition for AEW president Tony Khan.

Of course, the key is in the follow-up and how Moné will be positioned on the show going forward. From the get-go, though, she's already one of the biggest stars and most recognizable names on the entire roster.

If she's utilized properly, that will pay dividends for the company.

She'll be less of a game-changer for AEW on the whole than she can and will be for the women's division, a scene stockpiled with talent that Khan has struggled to book as strongly as their male counterparts.

This should include more women's main events (that make sense), more time for matches and more compelling storylines. It's such a simple recipe for success that it would be almost difficult for AEW to fumble what it now has in Moné as the future face of the division.

The buck stops with Khan, so if he starts to prioritize women's wrestling, that can be when Moné takes it to the next level.

Chad Gable, Liv Morgan and LA Knight Can Still Finish Their Stories Post-WrestleMania

As appealing as the card for WrestleMania 40 appears on paper, there are several Superstars who will be left out of the title mix who deserve to be included, namely Chad Gable, Liv Morgan and LA Knight.

Of the three, Knight is the only one with a 'Mania match confirmed, but it will be against AJ Styles and not for the United States Championship.

Despite wanting to settle her score with Rhea Ripley, Morgan will not be factored into the Women's World Championship matchup at the event. Meanwhile, Chad Gable fell short of becoming No. 1 contender to the Intercontinental Championship and avenging his loss to Gunther.

All three should have been walking out of WrestleMania with gold, but booking too many satisfying finishes on one show could cause them all to lose a bit of their luster.

Sami Zayn and Becky Lynch have nothing to gain from winning at The Show of Shows, so hope may not be lost for Gable and Morgan just yet. They can easily finish their stories coming out of April 6-7 and remain in chase mode until then.

Knight vs. Paul for the star-spangled prize could also be an attraction for SummerSlam.

The payoff to these moments are WrestleMania-worthy, but they can be equally meaningful, if not more so, on another stage instead.

WWE 2K Remains Measuring Stick for Wrestling Video Games with Latest Entry

WWE 2K24 had its worldwide release on March 8 to critical acclaim, and upon first playthrough, it isn't difficult to see why.

WWE Games has masterfully improved every installment since 2K22 by incorporating fan feedback, expanding the roster and making minor tweaks that enhance the overall experience.

In addition to the always-stunning graphics and gameplay, WWE 2K24's greatest strength is again its intricately detailed Showcase mode. In the past, players have relived some of Rey Mysterio and John Cena's biggest moments, and WWE 2K24 sees players reenact WrestleMania's most monumental matches from the past 40 years.

The updated selection of Superstars to choose from and all of the downloadable content still to come infinitely increases its replay value as well.

Old-school favorites such as WWF No Mercy, WCW/nWo Revenge and WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain may never be beaten as the best games in the genre, but 2K24 is certainly the strongest since that era.

AEW's fledgling Fight Forever game is a ways off from being remotely as revered but could experience similar success in time if the appropriate adjustments are made, something WWE Games has excelled at in recent years.

Rebuilding of Jay White as a Top AEW Heel Is Underway

It was mere months ago that Jay White was headlining Full Gear with MJF for the AEW World Championship, and after coming up short that night, it wasn't long before he dropped down the card.

Bullet Club Gold's unnecessary alliance with The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn in recent months has been entirely to blame for White's abysmal booking in 2024. Capturing the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship has actually done more to cool him off than heat him up.

The endgame of the angle was always for Bullet Club Gold to betray the babyfaces, but it should have happened sooner than Wednesday's Dynamite. What's important is that White is back on the right track to singles stardom now that he's beaten Darby Allin and disposed of the dead weight.

Kazuchika Okada debuting as a heel should have no effect on White whatsoever. He's proved himself as a main event-level heel and belongs toward the top of the card, not feuding with undercard acts.

If the AEW world title isn't in his immediate future, putting him in a program with another top talent would be an acceptable use of him. Almost anything would be an upgrade over the silliness he's been subjected to in 2024 so far.

Damage CTRL Storyline Is Ready to be Taken to Next Level

The gradual approach WWE has taken with the Damage CTRL storyline has made it fun to follow in the last several months, with Bayley's highly anticipated betrayal of her own faction marking the peak of the program so far.

Dakota Kai teasing an alliance with The Role Model only to turn on her made for an intriguing few weeks of television, but now it appears the promotion has hit a wall in terms of how they can keep Bayley and Damage CTRL busy before WrestleMania 40.

Their main event on Friday's SmackDown was a solid step in the right direction, but it wasn't enough to generate a ton of buzz for the feud. It went from feeling like a genuine top-of-the-card attraction at 'Mania to paling in comparison to other angles playing out at the moment.

Bayley failing to find backup is logical considering her babyface turn is still fresh, but they need to be more afforded more opportunities to talk in the ring in order to sell viewers on their storyline.

The match is bound to deliver regardless, but Bayley vs. Iyo Sky has been building for so long that it should be far hotter than it is by the time WrestleMania 40 rolls around.
