Tiger Woods Won't Play at 2024 Players Championship; Full Field Announced

Scott Polacek

There will be no Tiger Woods at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass for the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Rex Hoggard of Golf Channel shared the full field for one of the biggest tournaments of the year on Friday, and the 15-time major champion was not included:

While Woods won't be in the field, there will be plenty of marquee names in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Hideki Matsuyama, Colin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala, among others, will take the course in Thursday's opening round.

Scheffler is the reigning champion, while Thomas (2021) and McIlroy (2019) took home titles in recent versions of the event.

Woods is a two-time champion at the event, winning it in 2013 and 2001. Those were two of his 82 career PGA Tour victories, which is tied with Sam Snead for the most in the sport's history.

Woods started February's Genesis Invitational but withdrew from the second round because of illness. It was his first PGA Tour event since the 2023 Masters, but he didn't finish that event either and had to withdraw in the third round.

The 48-year-old suffered significant injuries in a February 2021 car accident and has undergone multiple back surgeries, which have kept him off the course in recent years and largely prevented him from building on his legendary resume.

It was easy to speculate that Woods might attempt to play at Sawgrass given its timing on the calendar. It is approximately one month before the Masters starts at Augusta National Golf Club on April 11, and Woods has won five green jackets and could chase a sixth.

Alas, he will not participate in The Players Championship and will have limited opportunities before the Masters if he is looking for a warm-up tournament.
