Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton told Shaquille O'Neal on The Big Podcast that he has "to be better" after having an altercation with two youth football coaches at a seven-on-seven tournament at his camp.

"But I just have to be better. And I want to use this as an example for athletes, entertainers, people of influence. … That is high a target to people where you just want to chill out with your friends. You may want to be at In-N-Out Burger, you want to go to Chick-fil-A, you want to just go to a hookah lounge, you just want to hang out. Somebody going to say something triggering to you and it just takes one time and ugly because I could be in jail, somebody filing a lawsuit, hell knows what happens with that."

Per the Atlanta Police Department, neither Newton nor the two coaches (Stephon and TJ Brown) sought medical attention, and none of them will be pressing charges.

It's unclear what led to the fight. It is known that Newton's team, C1N, fell to TopShelf the day before the fight.

Nehemiah Mitchell, the co-founder for We Ball Sports (which ran the tournament) told Lukas Weese and Joseph Person of The Athletic that there was a lot of trash talk between the teams on Saturday, and emotions from the game spilled over into the next day.

TopShelf released a statement on the matter, per The Athletic.

"We are deeply concerned about the recent incident involving Cam Newton, and our thoughts are with all parties affected. Violence has no place in our community, and we strongly condemn any form of aggression."

Newton played in the NFL from 2011 to 2021 with the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots. His accolades include the Heisman Trophy and a national title with the 2010 Auburn team, the 2015 NFL MVP with the Carolina Panthers and an NFC title with that group as well.
