Braves' Ronald Acuña Jr. Expected to Play On opening Day After Testing on Knee Injury

The Atlanta Braves announced Tuesday that superstar outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. is expected to be ready for the team's Opening Day game against the Philadelphia Phillies on March 28.

In a post on X, the Braves noted that while Acuña is dealing with irritation in the meniscus of his right knee, he is set to "gradually increase baseball activities" and should be ready for the start of the regular season:

On Friday, the Braves scratched Acuña from the lineup for a spring training game due to knee soreness, and it was announced shortly thereafter that he would meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache to determine the severity of the injury and the best course of action.

There was some added concern regarding Acuña's health since he tore the ACL in his right knee in 2021, limiting him to just 82 games that season.

Acuña bounced back to play in 119 games in 2022, but he clearly wasn't the same player as he was prior to the injury, hitting .266 with 15 home runs, 50 RBI, 71 runs scored and 29 stolen bases.

There was hope he would be back to his old self in 2023 after getting further removed from the injury, and Acuña undoubtedly delivered.

Last season, the 26-year-old slugger turned in arguably one of the greatest campaigns in MLB history, playing in 159 games and slashing .337/.416/.596 with 41 homers, 106 RBI, 149 runs and 73 steals.

Acuña set new career highs in almost every major category, led MLB in both runs and stolen bases, and became the first player in MLB history to have 40 or more home runs and 70 or more steals in a single season.

As a result, Acuña was named an All-Star for the fourth time, plus he won his third Silver Slugger Award and his first National League MVP Award.

With Acuña leading the way, the Braves posted the best record in the majors at 104-58 and won the NL East for a sixth consecutive season.

However, Acuña and the entire offense went cold in the playoffs, and the Braves fell 3-1 to the Phillies in the NL Division Series.

Despite the playoff shortcomings, expectations are high for Atlanta entering the 2024 season, as it is returning much of the same roster, including a lineup led by Acuña, Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies and Co.

Also, the Braves added veteran pitcher Chris Sale to an already formidable starting rotation, cementing their status as the co-favorite in the NL along with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A significant injury to Acuña could have tempered excitement for the upcoming season, but with all signs pointing toward him being good to go on Opening Day, there is a lot to love about the Braves and their chances of going on a deep run.
