OSU's Devin Brown Rips Critics, Says He's Not a 'Quitter' Amid Transfer Speculation

Adam Wells

Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown had a very clear message for anyone who is expecting him to enter the transfer portal among the heavy competition to become the starter next season.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Brown said he's never been "a quitter" and welcomes the opportunity to challenge for the Buckeyes' starting spot.

Ohio State already had one quarterback transfer when Kyle McCord, who started 12 games last season, made the move to Syracuse in December. He chalked the transfer up to being a business decision.

"At the end of the day, the top level of college football and then especially onto the pros, it's a business," McCord said on The QB Room podcast (h/t Colin Gay of the Columbus Dispatch). "At the end of the day, Ohio State had to make a business decision they felt like was best for them. And I had to do the same thing."

Brown made his first career start in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri after McCord left. He went 4-of-6 for 20 yards before leaving in the second quarter with an ankle injury.

McCord's departure opened the door for Will Howard to transfer to Columbus after he spent the past four seasons at Kansas State. This gave the Buckeyes a quarterback room of potentially five players competing to be the starter.

Brown has never shied away from the fact that he's in it with the Buckeyes. He wrote on X when he committed to the program in December 2021 he was "betting on myself...ALL IN!"

Despite some unfounded speculation that he might consider transferring, Brown is leaving no doubt he's not backing out of his pledge to play for Ohio State. He was a 4-star prospect and No. 5 quarterback in the 2022 class, per 247Sports.

Brown, Howard, Lincoln Kienholz, Air Noland and Julian Sayin are all likely to be given consideration to start for Ohio State next season.

If anyone wants to explore different opportunities away from Columbus, the spring transfer portal opens on April 15 for just 15 days before closing. Ohio State will begin spring practices on Tuesday, culminating with the spring game on April 13 at Ohio Stadium.
