Backstage WWE and AEW Rumors: Latest on Cody Rhodes, WrestleMania, and More

Erik Beaston

Cody Rhodes vowed Monday night on WWE Raw that The Bloodline is not hunting him but rather he is hunting The Bloodline.

And fans may see that come to fruition soon, according to a new insider report.

An update on Rhodes potentially appearing on SmackDown headlines a collection of rumors that also features the latest on WrestleMania 40 plans, news on Shawn Spears' surprise return, and a potential new All Elite Wrestling pay-per-view.

Cody Rhodes to Appear on SmackDown

Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com reported that Cody Rhodes will be at SmackDown this Friday night (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats).

With the Road to WrestleMania 40 heating up, and The American Nightmare's warning to Paul Heyman that he is hunting The Bloodline and not the other way around, it is not particularly surprising that he would appear on the blue brand on Friday.

What makes it a big deal is that The Rock will be in Glendale, Arizona for the show and we may finally see Rhodes get his revenge on The Great One for slapping him in the face during the WrestleMania Kickoff press event in Las Vegas.

Expect a hot angle as WWE goes full steam ahead for the biggest event of the year. Do not be surprised if we find out The Rock's response to Rhodes' challenge for a match, either. Maybe we get a second surprise appearance, perhaps from world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins.

Whatever the case, WWE is not just sending Rhodes to Arizona to shake hands, kiss babies and set off pyro. It is going to be a major development on this journey to Philadelphia and WrestleMania.

WrestleMania Card Additions

Fans were treated to two different teases of matches to expect on the WrestleMania card by way of angles that unfolded within the men's Elimination Chamber match on Saturday.

First, AJ Styles attacked LA Knight, costing him a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship in return for screwing him out of a spot in the chamber match.

Randy Orton then eliminated United States champion Logan Paul with an RKO, only to have the social media star clock him with a pair of brass knuckles to cost him victory inside the cage.

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that Styles vs. Knight and Orton vs. Paul are confirmed for the WrestleMania 40 card.

The Styles vs. Knight match has a surprising amount of backstory dating to September, when The Megastar got the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match against Roman Reigns that The Phenomenal One believed would be his until he was injured by Solo Sikoa.

The Paul vs. Orton match takes two of the most recognizable people in WWE and puts them together for a high-profile match that will almost certainly include the best RKO we have seen, maybe since The Viper downed Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 31.

Both are quality additions to a card that is already shaping up to be one of the most stacked in recent WWE history.

Update on Shawn Spears' Return to NXT

Shawn Spears shocked the wrestling world Tuesday night on NXT, when he returned to the brand after a long stint with AEW and rocked Ridge Holland with a steel chair.

The crowd in the NXT Arena reacted accordingly and social media was abuzz, two reactions that occurred almost exclusively because no one knew the return was happening.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported, "Few in NXT were aware of Spears' return, with one talent noting it was a 'complete shock'. As of 8pm EST, Spears was not listed on internal documents, nor was anyone else listed for Ridge Holland's promo outside of someone listed at 'quote man'."

The report also stated Shawn Michaels stood in for Spears during rehearsals to help keep a lid on the return.

It appears Holland will be up first for Spears based solely on what we saw Tuesday, but it will be interesting to see what comes next, what this incarnation of Spears is all about and how WWE explains the fact that NXT fans previously knew him as Tye Dillinger.

AEW Possibly Adding Another PPV

AEW may be adding a new PPV to its schedule, possibly as soon as April.

Sapp wrote: "Last week, Fightful reported that AEW filed a trademark claim for Dynasty. We've since learned via Warner Bros. Discovery sources that the trademark is connected to a pay-per-view event or special show, targeted for the spring. Word within All Elite Wrestling that we've heard is that it could be an April event."

Perhaps it will be a one-off special edition of Dynamite but regardless, it's proof that AEW is attempting to expand its lineup of significant shows and that may well be the best thing that could happen for the company.

There are times in which the creative direction gets muddied or unfocused between PPVs, with stars aimlessly wandering until it is time to heat back up for the next big show.

Adding a stopgap would do wonders to help limit that creative void and give episodes of the flagship, as well as Rampage and Collision, greater meaning.
