Capital One's 'The Match 9': Does McIlroy, Homa, Thompson or Zhang Have Edge?

Jake Rill

The ninth edition of Capital One's The Match golf series is set to take place Monday night. However, this iteration of the event will be much different.

All four participants are professional golfers. There aren't any former or current NFL/NBA players hitting the greens. And there also won't be any teams, as each of the four players will be competing individually.

Rory McIlroy and Max Homa will be representing the PGA, while Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang will be repping the LPGA. The four will be playing a mixed skins game at The Park in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Here's everything else you need to know heading into The Match 9.

Preview, Predictions

Four of the best golfers in the world (two men and two women) are taking part in The Match 9, so this should be a fun event. Any of the four could emerge victorious, too.

Plus, they'll be raising money for charity, which has always been the case for The Match events. The beneficiary for this edition is First Tee, which is an organization that empowers children through the sport of golf.

The four golfers will play 12 holes in a skins format, each worth a certain amount of money. The person who has raised the most money at the end will be crowned the champion.

The men and women will use the same tees for the four par-3 holes. The other eight holes will have different tees and yardages for the PGA and LPGA golfers.

This group of golfers is star-studded. McIlroy and Homa have combined for 30 wins on the PGA Tour. Twenty-four of those belong to McIlroy, who is also a four-time major champion.

Thompson has won six LPGA events, while Zhang captured her first tournament title last year at the Mizuho Americas Open in early June.

Zhang may have the least amount of wins, but the 20-year-old is one of golf's rising stars. She finished in the top nine at three majors last year.

However, the front-runner for The Match 9 has to be McIlroy, who is the only golfer in the field with previous experience in the series. He teamed with Tiger Woods in a losing effort in The Match 7 in December 2022, losing to the pairing of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

McIlroy has been playing well early in 2024, which has included a victory in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in mid-January. Obviously, the stakes aren't quite as high in The Match 9 as a regulation tournament, but the 34-year-old always seems to play well a big stage.

The pick here is McIlroy, who has a slight edge over the other three. But it wouldn't be surprising if Homa, Thompson or Zhang secure the win instead.

Prediction: McIlroy wins The Match 9
