Backstage WWE and AEW Rumors: Latest on The Rock and Roman Reigns, Rey Mysterio, More

Erik Beaston

It is the hottest period of the year for professional wrestling, with WWE WrestleMania 40 approaching, which means there is no shortage of rumors running across the industry.

The Rock and Roman Reigns headline this collection, with an update on the promo segment from Friday's episode of SmackDown, which saw fans reintroduced to the heel version of The Great One.

Who was directly involved in putting that segment together and what might it mean moving forward?

Find out with this report, which also features the latest on Rey Mysterio and All Elite Wrestling's Kyle Fletcher.

Latest on The Rock and Roman Reigns' SmackDown Promo

The Rock and Roman Reigns' first promo segment together on the February 16 episode of SmackDown was a mixed bag, but we now know who was behind it.

Aaron Varble of SEScoops wrote: "Roman Reigns and The Rock had major influence on the script. In the end, it was a discussion between Triple H, Roman, Heyman, Rock and Brian Gewirtz. Michael Hayes produced the segment, as he produces practically all of Roman Reigns' segments and matches."

That is not particularly surprising.

As the report stated, Hayes has long been involved in Reigns' work while Gewirtz is the well-known architect of some of The Rock's best stuff dating back to the Attitude Era. Heyman's involvement, considering his role in carefully crafting The Bloodline, makes sense and Triple H is the man at the helm of WWE Creative.

The question is whether there were too many people involved in the creative process at that point and if the product suffered because of it.

Maybe he was feeling out the crowd in Salt Lake City, but Rock was a bit rusty on the mic as a heel, and one has to wonder if that was the result of having so many people influencing what he and Reigns had to say on the show.

Maybe it was just the product of The Great One trying to rediscover himself in that role for the first time in 20 years.

Whatever the case may be, the idea that those who did have input were involved is not shocking, and nor will it be when it is ultimately revealed they all had their hands in this storyline leading into WrestleMania.

No one knows the two characters better than Gewirtz, Heyman, Hayes, Triple H and the Superstars themselves. So, who advocates for Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins?

That's a question for another time.

Update on Rey Mysterio's Return

The last time we saw Rey Mysterio on WWE TV, he was the victim of a beatdown by Santos Escobar, who betrayed his mentor and hero in the name of his own selfish gain.

That was on the November 10 episode of SmackDown, and fans have not seen or heard word of the WWE Hall of Famer since then.

Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Mysterio should return "in a few weeks" and that the plan was originally for him to be back by January but he could not make that happen.

The Master of the 619 will almost certainly return to feud with Escobar and Legado del Fantasma while leading the LWO. The question is whether there will be enough time to put something together for WrestleMania or if the veteran will return during an episode of SmackDown on the heels of the event.

There is not an abundance of writing that needs to go into the story, based on what has already been executed, so there is reason to believe Mysterio vs. Escobar is a match that can occur in Philadelphia on April 6 or 7.

The event can always use more star power, and the 49-year-old brings that with him. Add to it the incredibly personal storyline, and you have a match that would fit right at home in the lineup and could be one of the dark-horse candidates to steal the show.

Where is Kyle Fletcher?

Kyle Fletcher is one of the more promising young stars in AEW and a member of the hated Don Callis Family. He has also been conspicuous by his absence recently.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported the 25-year-old is facing visa issues.

Sapp wrote, "We're told that AEW has been very happy with Fletcher's performance." He added that the Australian had been "poised for a program with Ethan Page for the ROH World TV title."

It's disappointing that the young star had his momentum disrupted. He had gotten into a nice groove of in-ring singles performances and the feud with Page over the ROH TV title sounds like a ton of fun based on the talent involved.

Hopefully, Fletcher and AEW can get the issue settled in a timely fashion, not just for the product but also so the performer can resume his run of quality in-ring performances and build on the momentum he had established before his absence.
