Gleyber Torres Says He Wants to Be with Yankees 'For Life' Ahead of Contract Year

New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres is entering the final year of his contract, but he is hoping his time in the Big Apple won't end so soon.

"I don't want to leave here," Torres told reporters Wednesday. "I want to be a Yankee for life."

Torres and the Yankees agreed to a $14.2 million deal for the 2024 season to avoid arbitration in January.

The 27-year-old arrived in New York as the headlining prospect in a trade that sent closer Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs in 2016. Torres made his MLB debut two years later and looked like a potential franchise cornerstone, earning All-Star selections in his first two seasons in 2018 and 2019.

But Torres regressed over the next few years and entered the 2023 season as the subject of trade rumors. It must've served as motivation for him, as he put forth a strong campaign that reminded the Yankees why he was once pegged as a future superstar.

Torres finished the 2023 season hitting .273/.347/.453 with 25 home runs and 68 RBI. He was named a finalist for the Silver Slugger Award and proved to be one of the few bright spots for New York amid a disappointing season.

The Yankees went 82-80 and failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The team is surely driven to bounce back in 2024, and it will need Torres to continue performing at a high level in order to do so.

Another strong season from Torres could be exactly what he needs to convince New York to keep him around for the foreseeable future.
