Tiger Woods' return to PGA Tour competition since his abbreviated appearance at the 2023 Masters has been cut short by illness.

Woods withdrew from the second day of the Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California.

He was carted off the course seven holes into the second round.

After Woods' withdrawal, his manager Rob McNamara said Woods was given an IV and "potentially [has] some type of flu," per James Colgan of Golf.com.

Prior to McNamara's comments, paramedics arrived in an ambulance, seemingly to transport him for additional care. However, a paramedic at the scene said Woods would not be leaving in the ambulance.

Woods finished the first day of the competition tied for 57th among 70 competitors as he dealt with back spasms during the first 18 holes.

The event marked Woods' first PGA Tour competition since undergoing foot surgery in April 2023.

After a birdie on No. 1, Woods made par on the next two holes before hitting consecutive bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5.

Woods made par on No. 6, then hit his tee shot into the fairway on No. 7 before exiting on a cart. He was 2-over for the tournament at the time of his exit.

Friday marks the second consecutive PGA Tour event that Woods has exited early. The 15-time majors champion also withdrew from the 2023 Masters ahead of the third round.

Shortly afterword, Woods underwent surgery on a foot injury stemming from the 2021 car crash that injured his right leg.

After finishing the first day of the Genesis Invitational with a 1-over 72, Woods said that his foot felt fine but that his leg was sore and that he was limited by back spasms that led to him shanking a shot on the 18th hole, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach.

"Oh, definitely I shanked it," Woods told reporters after Thursday's first round. "My back was spasming the last couple holes and it was locking up. I came down and it didn't move and I presented hosel first and shanked it."

Woods has undergone five back surgeries, most recently in 2021.

Despite previous concerns over his back, foot and leg, the PGA Tour insisted that Woods' early exit from the Genesis Invitational was due to illness, not injury.

The 2024 season marks the third straight year that Woods has been limited in competition due to health reasons. He made only five official appearances in 2022 and 2023 combined, and played through a full tournament just twice over that stretch, according to Schlabach.
