After a merging of the XFL and USFL, the new United Football League is set to kick off next month with a new-look rulebook highlighted by a traditional style kickoff.

The UFL announced Tuesday the rules for its inaugural 2024 season, and the league's kickoffs will mimic a traditional style instead of the unconventional XFL-style kickoff that generated some buzz among NFL decision-makers.

UFL football operations chief Daryl Johnston told ESPN's Kevin Seifert that a traditional style kickoff is something "some of us felt was important" during merger negotiations.

"Our doctors provided us with player safety data that was very similar, concluding that choosing one version over the other did not have a significant impact on player safety," Johnston said.

"As always, we will continue to monitor the data after each season and ensure the format we use is the best version with all aspects considered. We believe the transition of the kickoff play can be a gradual process as we track potential player safety issues moving forward."

In the UFL, kickers will line up at the 20-yard line, which could eliminate the potential for touchbacks.

This is different from the XFL-style kickoff, which had the kicker stand by himself at his 30-yard line while his teammates stood on the opponents' 35-yard line. Only the kicker and returner could move until the ball was fielded or on the ground for three seconds.

The XFL's kickoff style was implemented to limit high-speed collisions and encourage kickoff returns instead of touchbacks.

Other UFL rules include a three-tiered option for post-touchdown points—one point for a successful try from the two-yard line, two points for a successful try from the five-yard line and three points for a successful try from the 10-yard line.

There is also an alternative to an onside kick and coaches will be allowed one challenge per game.

Additionally, defensive pass interference will be a 15-yard penalty unless it is judged to be intentional. If the DPI is considered intentional, it will be a spot foul if it occurs more than 15 yards down field.

The UFL kicks off with Week 1 on March 30. The respective champions from the XFL and USFL, the Birmingham Stallions and Arlington Renegades, highlight the league's opening week matchups.
