Danuel House Jr.'s time with the Philadelphia 76ers is apparently coming to an end.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the 76ers are trading the forward and a 2024 second-round draft pick that they owned via the New York Knicks to the Detroit Pistons. The move comes hours before Thursday's 3 p.m. ET trade deadline.
Wojnarowski noted the move gives the 76ers more flexibility:
House was a role player who is set to become a free agent during the upcoming offseason, so this isn't a major loss from Philadelphia's perspective.
As for the Pistons, they at least added a second-round pick as they look ahead to the future in what has been a disappointing campaign. They have the worst record in the NBA at 7-43 and could use all the draft capital and young players they can get at this point.
House likely isn't going to change their 2023-24 fate.
He is a journeyman who has played for the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, Knicks, Utah Jazz and 76ers throughout his career. He has appeared in 34 games this season and is averaging 4.2 points and 1.7 rebounds while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 30 percent from deep.
There was likely going to be even less playing time for him on the wing moving forward in Philadelphia after the 76ers acquired Buddy Hield in a trade with the Indiana Pacers earlier Thursday, per Wojnarowski.
The 76ers' ultimate ceiling this season will depend on Joel Embiid's ability to return to the floor from the knee injury that has sidelined him, but they have been aggressive before Thursday's deadline and could end up adding more pieces.
Wojnarowski specifically highlighted Kyle Lowry as a possible contract-buyout addition, which would provide veteran and playoff-tested leadership to the backcourt alongside Tyrese Maxey.
Creating enough flexibility to complete that move down the line would make trading House worth it for the Eastern Conference contender.
