Aces' Kelsey Plum 'Very Grateful' to See Iowa's Caitlin Clark Chase Scoring Record

Las Vegas Aces guard Kelsey Plum is cheering on Iowa Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark's attempt to break the NCAA scoring record Plum set in 2017.

"I'm actually very grateful to pass that baton. I'm very happy for her," Plum told ESPN's Michael Voepel Friday.

Plum finished her Washington career with 3,527 points in 139 games to set a new NCAA women's basketball record.

Clark, a senior at Iowa, has 3,424 points through 122 career contests. She is on pace to pass Plum's career total in four more games.

Plum passed Jackie Stiles to become the all-time leading scorer in women's college basketball in February 2017, a time she described to Voepel as "very much a low point in my life."

The Aces star has previously talked about how the pressure on her to break the record impacted her mental health. Plum told Just Women's Sports Rachel Galligan in 2022 that she suffered anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts while chasing Stiles' standard.

Now, Plum wants to make sure Clark doesn't have to face the same struggle alone.

"It felt like a lot of pressure, and my identity was kind of caught up in that record," Plum told Voepel. "I hope everyone in the media takes time to understand that [Clark] is not just a basketball player but a young woman that has feelings and emotions. She carries it with grace, but there's a lot to handle there."

"If anything, make sure that we show her love outside of her performance. She'll break it. I'm excited for her."

When Clark moved past Stiles and Kelsey Mitchell on the NCAA's all-time scoring list during Iowa's 110-74 Wednesday victory over Northwestern, she expressed excitement about nearing the record set by Plum, a player she said she watched growing up.

"I think the coolest thing is just the names that I get to be around," Clark told reporters after the game. "Those are people that I grew up watching, especially Kelsey Plum, Brittney Griner, Kelsey Mitchell. Those are really, really great players."

If Clark continues to produce at her current pace of more than 30 points per game, she could be set to break Plum's record on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Nebraska or Thursday, Feb. 15 versus Michigan.
