The NHL is adding a new event to the schedule for the 2024-25 season that will pit players from Canada, the United States, Finland and Sweden against each other.

The league announced on Friday the 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off that will feature seven games played over nine days from Feb. 12-20. Two cities—one in the United States and one in Canada—will host the games.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said during Friday's press conference the league and NHL Players Association have a plan for the international calendar through 2032 that includes allowing players to participate in the Winter Olympics for the first time since 2014:

Each team will be comprised of 23 players selected by each nation's hockey association: Hockey Canada, Finnish Ice Hockey Association, Swedish Ice Hockey Association and USA Hockey.

The tournament will be contested in a traditional round-robin format. A regulation win is worth three points; overtime/shootout wins are worth two points; overtime/shootout losses are worth one point; and regulation losses are worth zero points.

Overtime in the round-robin part of the tournament will feature a three-on-three 10-minute sudden-death period, followed by a a three-round shootout. The championship game will be contested at full strength with successive 20-minute sudden-death overtime periods until one team scores.

Eligible players must be under an NHL contract for the 2024-25 season and on an NHL roster as of Dec. 2, 2024. The first six players for each of the four teams will be announced by the NHL and NHLPA this summer, with the rest of the squad revealed later in the year.

The NHL will not hold a traditional All-Star weekend for the 2024-25 season.
