One of the greatest boxers of the modern era is set to make his return to the ring this spring.

Sky Sports announced that Vasiliy Lomachenko will be back in action when he faces Australia native George Kambosos for the vacant IBF lightweight title on May 12 in Perth. The fight will be broadcast on May 11 in the United States.

Lomachenko, who is a former three-division titleholder and undisputed lightweight champion, last fought in May 2023 when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to then-undisputed lightweight camp Devin Haney. The matchup was a highly entertaining back-and-forth bout that had some disputing the decision and believing that Lomachenko did enough to earn the win. Still, both fighters earned praise and respect for their performances.

Haney vacated the IBF lightweight title when he moved up to super lightweight and defeated Regis Prograis for his WBC super lightweight title in December.

Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) is hoping a win against Kambosos will start him on the path toward becoming undisputed champion again.

"Right now, my goal is to become a world champion again," Lomachenko told Sky Sports. "After that, I can start thinking about becoming undisputed. I respect George Kambosos because he never gives up during a fight. It will be a very interesting fight because we have two different styles, and styles make fights."

Kambosos (21-2, 10 KOs) was a three-belt holder after defeating Teofimo Lopez in 2021, but he dropped back-to-back decisions to Haney the following year, which still stand as the only losses on his record. He bounced back with a majority decision win over Maxi Hughes to claim the IBO lightweight title.

"I never step away from a challenge. I always want to fight the best. And Vasiliy Lomachenko is a guy we have looked at for a very long time. This guy is a legend," Kambosos said. "This fight rejuvenates my career. This gives me my redemption."
