While the Milwaukee Bucks stunned the NBA world and fired head coach Adrian Griffin on Tuesday, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, there was reportedly a time when Giannis Antetokounmpo was advocating for his hiring.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Antetokounmpo "chose to champion Griffin" when the Bucks were choosing a new head coach during the past offseason after firing Mike Budenholzer.
Stein added an important note, though, pointing out "the desire to play for Griffin is better described as a determination to play for someone other than Nick Nurse."
While Nurse was a candidate at the time for Milwaukee, he ended up going to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Tuesday's decision means more coaching turnover for Milwaukee.
Budenholzer was there for five seasons and finished with a 271-120 record and five playoff appearances. He also led the franchise to the championship during the 2020-21 campaign, which was Milwaukee's first since the 1970-71 season.
Yet a shocking first-round loss to the Miami Heat during the 2023 postseason meant the end of his tenure.
Nurse was in a similar situation this past offseason to Budenholzer, as the Toronto Raptors fired him after a play-in tournament loss despite five seasons of success that included the franchise's only championship during the 2018-19 campaign.
However, Antetokounmpo apparently wanted the Bucks to go a different direction than Nurse and advocated for the since-fired Griffin.
There could be a high-profile name coming in, as Wojnarowski reported Doc Rivers is the team's "top" target to become the next head coach.
Whether it is Rivers or someone else, winning over the room for a championship contender will be key. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated reported "there have been steady rumblings for weeks in NBA circles that several Bucks veterans, including Giannis, had lost faith in Griffin. What appeared to be a smart hire last spring just never worked out."
It apparently didn't take long from Antetokounmpo to go from pushing for Griffin to losing trust in him.
