Early Best Landing Spots for Potential No. 1 NHL Draft Pick Macklin Celebrini

Joe Yerdon

With the NHL All-Star break rapidly approaching and every team beyond the midway point of the season, it's time to start thinking ahead to the draft for more than a few clubs.

That also means looking ahead to where potential No. 1 pick Macklin Celebrini might end up.

Your favorite team might just be a few points out of a playoff spot, but it's OK to keep an eye on the future. And if your team's future has the Boston University product as part of it, you're going to be thankful for it.

But which teams would benefit the most from landing the highly talented scorer? That's what we're here to figure out. The worst teams would benefit from having Celebrini, but some underperforming sides could have luck on their side in the lottery and would immediately reap the benefits of landing, arguably, the best player in the draft.

Let's take a brief tour around the NHL and examine some of the more interesting possibilities.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks have been the worst team in the league, and it's kind of sad to see. They've got uniforms that look great, but outside of Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture (who's been injured most of the season), they're deeply lacking in overall talent.

The Sharks' young players are trying to find their way either with a poor NHL team or are developing elsewhere, but San Jose needs a lot of help now just to become even a little bit more competitive. Getting Celebrini in would give it a top talent to build around.

The Sharks drafted Will Smith and Quentin Musty in the first round in 2023, and they're shaping up to be good players when they turn pro. But having them elevate along with Celebrini would give their rebuild some much-needed rocket fuel.

Getting Celebrini to Northern California would give fans a reason to get excited about the years to come and not have to hope 44-year-old Joe Thornton tries to give it one more go even though they're retiring his number next season.

Chicago Blackhawks

When Chicago landed the No. 1 pick in the draft last year, it's safe to say fans in 31 other NHL cities weren't happy.

After all, things hadn't been bad in the Windy City for too long and the team's fans haven't suffered all that much after winning Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

However, fairness has nothing to do with anything when it comes to the draft lottery and landing Connor Bedard put Chicago's rebuild into fast-forward mode.

The Blackhawks have been bad again this year (which they were going to be with Bedard anyway), but it's even more apparent with the 18-year-old out with a broken jaw and the other injuries they've sustained.

If fans thought they were angry Chicago landed Bedard, how upset will they be if the team lands Celebrini as well? They would be incensed, but the 'Hawks would have their next generation of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane to build around.

Adding Celebrini alongside Bedard, Kevin Korchinski and prospects Frank Nazar, Oliver Moore, Adam Gajan and Sam Rinzel would give them a tremendous stockpile of young talent with, arguably, the two best at the top of it.

It would be awesome to see Celebrini and Bedard play together, but it would also be understandable why it would make Chicago even more disliked beyond its direct rivals.

Anaheim Ducks

We know things haven't been great for the Anaheim Ducks again this season, but what they're building is exciting.

Seeing 2023 No. 2 overall pick Leo Carlsson jump right into action this year along with fellow youngsters Trevor Zegras, Mason McTavish and Pavel Mintyukov makes them a lot of fun to watch.

Older players such as Troy Terry and Frank Vatrano playing well alongside them shows that Anaheim has something cooking and the team just needs some time to mature.

Factor in the addition of Cutter Gauthier and, boy, that's a lot of fun. But adding Celebrini to the mix would give Ducks fans a lot more to get excited about.

Even though there have been trade rumors about Zegras, a trio of forwards like the 22-year-old, Carlsson and Celebrini would mean the Ducks attacking teams in waves.

With a one-two punch of Celebrini and Carlsson, Anaheim would have the kind of dynamic duo it hasn't seen since Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry ran amok in Orange County.

The Ducks have a good thing coming together and if they can see their lottery luck improve and come away with Celebrini, all eyes would be on them for years to come.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Oh, the Blue Jackets. Will they ever get a break? Maybe 2024 could be the year in which they do if they can take Celebrini in the draft.

Columbus has some pieces, even if they're being used in odd ways this season, and getting Celebrini to team up with Adam Fantilli and David Jiricek would afford it the chance to take that next step forward.

We know that the Blue Jackets have Johnny Gaudreau, Patrik Laine and Zach Werenski as their more veteran leaders and that they have been bold in adding guys such as Damon Severson and Ivan Provorov, but injuries and curious ice-time distribution have turned things into a mess.

Celebrini joining this group could help turn that around in a big way.

Fantilli is showing he's a special player and has been a bright light of hope in Ohio, but the team needs more. Celebrini would allow Columbus to be aggressive moving forward and perhaps also unlock more goals from its talent on the wings.

We want to see nice things happen for the Jackets for once and landing Celebrini would more than qualify.

Ottawa Senators

It's been tough to see the Senators struggle so much this season. Off the ice, things have straightened up with new ownership, new management and a new-old coach in Jacques Martin, but the high hopes of returning to the playoffs this season have been dashed.

From Shane Pinto's suspension to poor goaltending to overall struggles playing for former coach D.J. Smith, so much has gone wrong.

The Sens have a lot of young talent up front with Pinto, Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stützle, Josh Norris and Ridly Greig and scoring goals hasn't been a problem. But if you can outscore everyone all the time, who cares about goaltending, right?

Adding Celebrini to the Sens' bevy of scorers would allow them to go all gas, no brakes all the time if they wanted. Interim head coach Jacques Martin might not be too happy about that, but good luck reining in a group that can boast such scorers throughout the lineup.

Perhaps more importantly, adding Celebrini would allow Ottawa to move one of those other young players to address needs elsewhere in the lineup while also maintaining its ability to score a ton of goals.

General manager Steve Staios would love to have a problem like that instead of the issues he's had to handle already.

Buffalo Sabres

Like the Senators, the Buffalo Sabres even being remotely close to this discussion is more upsetting than it is exciting.

Buffalo is supposed to be pushing hard for the playoffs and not even considering being deep enough in the draft lottery to pick at No. 1. But if luck is on the Sabres' side again and they can draft Celebrini, the excitement it would provide for trade rumors would be enormous.

Even though the Sabres already have a ton of young talent, there's no way they would pass on Celebrini. The issue would be how they'd maneuver their lineup and prospect pool to surround him (and the other young stars) with supporting players to return to the postseason.

Celebrini joining Rasmus Dahlin, Tage Thompson, Owen Power, Dylan Cozens, JJ Peterka, Jack Quinn and Zach Benson would be eye-popping. But with prospects like Matt Savoie, Jiri Kulich, Isak Rosén and Noah Östlund in the pipeline, you can't play all of them and you do need some veterans.

Sabres GM Kevyn Adams would have a powerful hand to work with to better arrange the lineup and would still be able to work Celebrini into the lineup with plenty of support.

If it weren't for such a disappointing reason to be in this position, it would be far more exciting for Sabres fans to think about the possibility.

Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild are in a tough position, but as difficult as it's been to see them struggle after having such a great season last year, the thought of adding a No. 1 center like Celebrini must be enticing.

The Wild have Marco Rossi, Matthew Boldy, and Kirill Kaprizov up front, with rookie Brock Faber becoming a defensive superstar before our eyes. They have superb young players who are performing very well in the league right now.

However, they're also still in salary-cap purgatory for one more year thanks to the Zach Parise and Ryan Suter buyouts, and some of their other supporting players aren't getting any younger.

It's a tricky spot to be in, and their chances of getting to the postseason are slipping away rapidly. Adding Celebrini to their group next season would immediately put the Wild back into playoff contention if not just straight out into the postseason.

The Wild's top-end talent is outstanding, but they're lacking overall depth in that department. Adding Celebrini to the lineup would immediately give them a top playmaker in the middle and allow them to slide their other centers down a line and make them stronger immediately.

Yes, missing the playoffs and not having a lot of salary maneuverability is bad, but if it means coming away with the best player in the draft, a season of agony can be worth the pain.

Montréal Canadiens

Even though the Montréal Canadiens haven't been great this year, they are, perhaps, punching a bit above their weight and that's encouraging considering they've got a relatively young team.

What would help speed up their rebuild is adding Celebrini to their prospect pool.

The Habs scored big a couple of years ago taking Juraj Slafkovský with the 2022 No. 1 pick and then defenseman David Reinbacher at No. 5 a year ago.

With those two players plus 2022 first-round picks Filip Mesar and Kaiden Guhle, there's a lot to work with. Nick Suzuki is a stellar captain and coach Martin St. Louis' style of hockey brings a lot of excitement.

Adding Celebrini would give the Canadiens a one-two punch up the middle with Suzuki that would allow their rebuild to evolve from one where they're doing their best to one where they can now set their sights on going for the playoffs.

Celebrini's ability to pile up points would give them a young star to help drive their attack and someone who St. Louis could best use to push their attack.
