Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Suggests Thunder Will See Heat in NBA Finals After Win

Adam Wells

As the Oklahoma City Thunder are enjoying a breakout season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander appears to have very high confidence in his team's chances of making a deep playoff run.

Following Wednesday's 128-120 win over the Miami Heat, Gilgeous-Alexander teased a rematch between the two teams in the NBA Finals.

There's certainly a valid argument this could be a Finals matchup. Oklahoma City owns the second-best record in the Western Conference (25-11) and is only one game behind the Minnesota Timberwolves in the win column for the top spot.

The Heat just proved last season they don't need to be great in the regular season to make a deep postseason. They are currently the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference with a 21-16 record, but they've been without Jimmy Butler for nine of the last 10 games due to a toe injury.

Butler told reporters on Tuesday he's "moving better" and hopes to be able to manage the pain well enough that he can return to the court soon.

Even without Butler on the floor Wednesday night, the Heat and Thunder had an excellent back-and-forth battle. Oklahoma City opened the second half by scoring 10 consecutive points to take a 78-69 lead.

Miami went on a run of its own in the third quarter to retake the lead 94-92 after a Haywood Highsmith three-pointer. The Thunder took control after that, eventually extending the lead to 16 points midway through the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Oklahoma City has won seven of its last nine games, with wins over the Timberwolves, Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets during this stretch.

Even though the Thunder are a young team that doesn't have significant playoff experience, they are playing like a group more than capable of making a lot of noise in the postseason.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who had 28 points and eight assists against the Heat, is playing at an MVP level. He's averaging 31.4 points, 6.4 assists, 5.9 rebounds and an NBA-high 2.4 steals per game in 35 starts.

Oklahoma City will look to keep its positive momentum going on Thursday when it hosts the Portland Trail Blazers.
