Aaron Rodgers Open to Recruiting Players to Jets amid Davante Adams Trade Buzz

Aaron Rodgers is willing to offer his services to the New York Jets if they want him to help recruit players.

During his end-of-season press conference, Rodgers expressed a willingness to help build the roster if the front office is interested.

"If [general manager Joe Douglas] wants my help in recruiting, I'm available. I don't necessarily think it has to be anybody associated with this system," he said. "It's about character. You know, I think we need some characters on the offensive line. Some of the best lines we've ever had, have had some serious characters."

Davante Adams will likely be a subject of speculation after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported during the season the Jets pursued a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders and they are expected to bring it up again in the offseason.

The speculation only got louder on Monday when Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson announced he was changing his jersey number from 17 to five next season, prompting Adams to like a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, about the swap.

Adams has worn No. 17 for his entire NFL career. He also played eight seasons with Rodgers as a member of the Green Bay Packers from 2014 to '21.

It should be noted in 2021 that Rodgers claimed players "wanna come or get traded or come to Green Bay" to play with him, though there was very little evidence he significantly impacted who was acquired by the Packers.

Some of that could be due to the fact that Green Bay's front office tends not to be aggressive with spending on free agents or making marquee trades that would require giving up significant draft capital.

But based on moves the Jets made last offseason in anticipation of acquiring Rodgers, he may not be the best person to rely on for advice about which people to bring in because of their history with him.

Randall Cobb had a total of 39 yards from scrimmage this season. Allen Lazard was a healthy scratch for two different games. Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is expected to return next season, despite little evidence that he brings anything unique from a schematic standpoint to the table.

Adams is a much better player than either Cobb or Lazard. The six-time Pro Bowler had 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns this season with subpar quarterback play from the Las Vegas Raiders.

One significant issue for the Jets, even if they want to pursue Adams, is his contract. He's got a $25.4 million cap hit in 2024.

They currently have $15.98 million in cap space next season with several needs on the roster, not least of which is the offensive line to protect a 40-year-old Rodgers coming off a torn Achilles.

Is it really in New York's best interest to pay Adams the money he's still owed and give up the type of draft capital the Raiders would likely be seeking to trade one of the best receivers in the NFL?

The idea of a Rodgers-Adams reunion is fun on paper, but their salary cap and roster situation might make it hard to turn into a reality.

Of course, many moves the Jets have made over the past 12 months shows they will seemingly do whatever Rodgers wants. If he wants to play with Adams again, perhaps they will go all-in to make it happen.
