Rams' Matthew Stafford Says Playoff Game vs. Lions at Ford Field Will Be 'Fun for Me'

Andrew Peters

Matthew Stafford is looking forward to taking on his former team in the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Rams will face the Detroit Lions in a wild-card matchup at Ford Field next Sunday, marking the first home playoff game for the Lions since 1993. Per ESPN's Sarah Barshop, Stafford is excited about playing in the stadium that he called home for 12 seasons, and he's expecting a lively environment.

"The opportunity happens to be in Detroit, which is fun for me on a personal level," Stafford said, per Barshop. "... I know it's going to be rocking there. Haven't had a playoff game there about 30 years or whatever it is. So it'll be a great atmosphere. It'll be a tough task for us, but definitely excited."

The Rams capped off the regular season on a four-game winning streak, beating the San Francisco 49ers in the season finale.

While Stafford had a solid run under center for the Lions, he only managed to get Detroit into the postseason three times, with all of those runs ending in the wild-card round. He has since gone on to win a Super Bowl with the Rams.

The Lions reached the postseason for the first time since 2016 this year, finishing the regular season 12-5 and harboring Super Bowl dreams.

Quarterback Jared Goff will also be facing his former team. He was drafted by the Rams in 2016, spending five seasons in Los Angeles before he was traded for Stafford in 2021.

During his tenure, Goff led the Rams to the Super Bowl in 2018, falling short to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Being one of the few players on Detroit's roster with Super Bowl experience, he's looking to lead his team on a deep run.

Sunday's game will be a special one for both quarterbacks, but they'll need to be locked in to reach the divisional round and a potential matchup with Dallas or Green Bay.
