San Francisco 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett will undergo surgery for a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
Verrett suffered the injury in practice and he will require four-to-six months to recover, effectively ending his season. Verrett was preparing to be elevated from the 49ers' practice squad and was planning to play in Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams.
The 49ers signed Verrett to the practice squad on Dec. 11 and planned to get him ready to play a bigger role towards the end of the regular season. He was elevated to the active roster for San Francisco's Christmas Day matchup with the Baltimore Ravens, where he appeared in his first game since Week 1 of the 2021 season, when he tore his ACL.
A former first round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Verrett has dealt with a multitude of injuries throughout his career. Before he was drafted, he had surgery to repair a torn labrum that he suffered while playing at TCU. In 2016, he tore his left ACL while playing for the Los Angeles Chargers and aggravated that injury in the 2017 season opener, keeping him sidelined for the remainder of the year.
He tore his Achilles ahead of the 2018 season and once again missed the entire year as well as most of the 2019 season. In 2021, he tore his right ACL in the season opener before missing all of last season while working his way back from knee issues. He tore his Achilles again in November 2022.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had high praise for the way Verrett has handled the injuries.
"He handles it like he does everything, like a man," Shanahan said. "But you know how it is. He's going to be pretty down for a little bit. I hope he hangs around here because we all love him around here. I think that could help him. And this will pass, like it always does. He had a long road to get back to this point and I just told him I can't believe how good he's looked."
With San Francisco already having clinched the NFC West and the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC, there's not much at stake in Sunday's contest with the Rams. The 49ers will likely be using the game to pick up momentum and notch their second-straight 13-win season.
