Knicks Rumors: OG Anunoby Expected to Get Contract 'Far Above' $118M in Free Agency

New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby is expected to receive contract offers "far above" the four-year, $118 million extension he would have been eligible to sign with the Toronto Raptors once he enters free agency at the end of the 2023-24 season (per Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports).

Anunoby was acquired by the Knicks during a trade with Toronto on Dec. 31, with New York sending RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley along with a second-round pick to the Raptors. The 26-year-old has a player option worth just under $20 million for the 2024-25 season, which he is expected to decline (via Spotrac).

There is some optimism that New York will be the team to pay Anunoby, given the strong ties between his representation and the team's front office. The former first-round pick is represented by Sam Rose of CAA, the son of Knicks president Leon Rose. The elder Rose was also the co-head of the basketball division at CAA before he was hired by New York in 2020.

The Knicks will have some financial flexibility after moving on from the team's young talent, too. Barrett is currently playing on a four-year deal worth roughly $107 million, while Quickley is set to enter restricted free agency in the offseason and could sign a large offer sheet with an opposing team.

While there are several connections between Anunoby's agency and the Knicks' brass, he'd likely command an offer north of $30 million annually from several organizations outside of New York.

Since the 2021-22 season, he's averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds to go along with 1.6 steals per game. Anunoby hit 46.7 percent of his field goals and 37.6 percent of his threes over the same span, showing his value as a low-usage offensive option that can fit seamlessly on a variety of rosters.

Defense is his calling card, though. Anunoby led the NBA with his 1.9 steals per game last season, getting named to the 2022-23 NBA All-Defensive Second Team. He has the size and agility to match up against several different positions, using his 7'2" wingspan to disrupt passing lanes and block shots.
